YouTube bringing automatic background play to Android Automotive cars

Google is set to enhance the experience of Android Automotive users with a series of app updates under the “Google built-in” initiative. These updates promise to introduce a wider array of video applications and greater flexibility, including the ability for YouTube to operate in the background while driving.

Over the next few weeks, vehicles equipped with Android Automotive can anticipate a revamped Play Store experience. This redesign is tailored to accommodate various car display sizes and orientations, while also enhancing the categorization and discoverability of apps. Currently, Google boasts a library of over 700 applications available for Android Automotive.

In addition to the existing offerings, several new apps are on the horizon, including popular titles such as STARZ, Firefox, Ludo King, and JioHotstar.

One of the standout features making its debut on Android Automotive is the background play capability for YouTube, available to users with a Premium subscription. This functionality allows drivers to enjoy video content while parked and seamlessly transition to audio playback during their journey.

While Google initially announced this feature for 2025, this marks the first direct mention of it for YouTube. Furthermore, Android Auto, which projects apps from smartphones, is also expected to welcome video applications in the near future, raising hopes that similar background play capabilities will be implemented. Recently, YouTube has rolled out support for background play controls on Android Auto through media updates, enhancing the overall user experience.
