A new bi-weekly column called Terminally Online from PC Gamer explores the world of massively multiplayer online games (MMOs), featuring insights, interviews, and guest writers. The design of contemporary MMORPGs has shifted towards seasonal structures to cater to "midcore" players who have limited time for gameplay. Popular MMOs like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV have been around for over 20 years and a decade, respectively, while newer games like Amazon's New World have struggled with player retention. The column encourages readers to share their experiences and reminisce about the MMO community.

Obsidian Entertainment, founded in 2004, is known for titles like Knights of the Old Republic 2, Fallout: New Vegas, and Pillars of Eternity. The studio was acquired by Microsoft in late 2018, leading to a cautious approach in its development, as seen in The Outer Worlds and the reimagined Avowed. Despite recent challenges, including layoffs, Obsidian has produced successful titles outside its traditional RPG genre, such as Grounded and Pentiment. The studio is currently working on New Vegas 2, generating optimism among fans and industry observers.

Survival games often involve repetitive tasks like gathering resources and building bases. Palworld, released on Steam's early access, differentiates itself by allowing players to capture "Pals" that perform laborious tasks, reducing the grind typical of the genre. Players initially engage in standard survival activities but can later assign Pals to chop wood, water crops, gather resources, and manage planting and harvesting. This transforms the player's base into a self-sustaining entity, enabling them to explore without the anxiety of leaving their base unattended. The game encourages players to consider the utility of Pals in addition to their combat abilities, allowing for a more dynamic gameplay experience. Palworld retains core survival mechanics while minimizing repetitive tasks, focusing on adventure and exploration.

Overwatch introduced a 1-3-2 flex mode, allowing one tank, three DPS, and two support characters, with the option for one DPS to switch to tank. Early experiences indicate that teams with two tanks often dominate those with one, raising concerns about the format's balance. Adjustments to tank health and abilities do not sufficiently address the advantages of having two tanks. The exploration of this hybrid format does not resolve the ongoing debate between the 5v5 and 6v6 setups, as each has distinct characteristics that complicate finding a viable compromise.

Joe Ziegler, the game director of Marathon, has left Bungie and the game effective immediately, just four months after its release. Del Chafe III will take over Ziegler's role, working with creative director Julia Nardin. Ziegler expressed gratitude to fans in a message on X and hinted at new opportunities ahead. Marathon's player counts on Steam have not matched those of Destiny 2, and the game faces challenges in establishing itself in a competitive market. Ziegler joined Bungie in 2022 and became the leader of Marathon two years ago. His departure, along with that of Lars Bakken, former design lead for Marathon, raises concerns about Bungie's stability and future direction.

Electronic Arts (EA) has announced a new advertising platform aimed at integrating in-game ads in a way that feels organic and beneficial for both players and brands. EA's vice president of advertising, Alexander Dao, highlighted the importance of designing advertising experiences from the outset to create a native feel and allow for greater brand participation. He emphasized the need for standardization in advertising practices, particularly regarding viewability standards and reporting metrics, to ensure consistency and accountability in advertising investments. EA recently collaborated with Coach to offer nine free branded items in The Sims, based on player surveys about brand preferences. Dao expressed a desire to balance commercial interests with player satisfaction, noting concerns about advertising potentially detracting from the gaming experience.
