Google may finally fix a major frustration with Android’s Photo Picker

Google is enhancing the Android Photo Picker by integrating a built-in media editor, as indicated by the "EditFeature" class found in the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 2. This editor will allow users to make quick edits, such as cropping and marking images, directly within the Photo Picker interface. The media editor aims to streamline the editing process, enabling users to edit media without leaving the Photo Picker, thus improving user experience and consistency across third-party applications. The feature is part of a Project Mainline module, allowing updates through Google Play System Updates. While the media editor is not yet active, further developments are anticipated.

VPN provider built a script to block Microsoft’s hidden GDID tracking on Windows — Windscribe’s “deGDID” erases existing identifiers and blocks new ones from being created

Microsoft's Global Device Identifier (GDID) was instrumental in the FBI's arrest of an alleged hacker, raising privacy concerns among advocates. In response, Windscribe launched an open-source project called "deGDID," which removes the GDID from users' PCs but may disrupt certain Microsoft cloud services. The deGDID script can be executed via PowerShell and includes three execution flags: –Status (checks if GDID is active), –Status –Redact (logs with GDID redacted), and –Protect (removes GDID and prevents new identifiers). Users have reported effective functioning of the script, though it can cause issues with Microsoft applications. Windscribe notes that deGDID is a research project that will evolve, but it may not eliminate all GDID instances, and Microsoft retains access to previous keys.

Android Apps Share Location Data With Advertisers by Default

A recent investigation by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) revealed that many Android applications contain third-party code that automatically transmits users' precise location data to external companies, including advertisers and data brokers, once location permission is granted. There are no specific location permissions for Software Development Kits (SDKs) on Android, meaning that granting one app access allows all bundled components to access the same data. Developers may be unaware that their apps are configured to share location histories with external firms, as advertising SDKs often prioritize data collection for revenue generation. The EFF calls for advertising SDKs to stop making personal data sharing the default setting and urges developers to disable unnecessary data collection. Location data can reach data brokers, which may experience breaches, compromising user privacy and security. This situation poses hidden risks for investors in the mobile advertising sector, as legal challenges and reputational damage may arise from regulatory scrutiny of location data practices. The EFF emphasizes that app-level permissions do not provide meaningful consent for third-party data sharing, highlighting the value and risks associated with location data.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla director comes back to Ubisoft to be game director for the entire brand

Eric Baptizat has returned to Ubisoft as the game director for the entire Assassin's Creed series after a brief hiatus. He previously served as the lead game designer on Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag and as the director of Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Baptizat has a 16-year tenure at Ubisoft, contributing to key titles such as Black Flag, Origins, and Valhalla. 29 years later, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night gets its second PC port in 4 weeks thanks to fans of the PS1 version

PC gamers can now enjoy a native port of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, originally launched on the PlayStation 1, following the release of a recompilation based on the Xbox 360 version. The unofficial port, NocturneRecomp, allowed players to experience the 2007 Xbox 360 version, while SymphonyRecomp, introduced by BlackLabelHQ, offers an alternative.
