Arise Dark Lord is a new RTS where you raise evil armies and crush “godless heathens”

Introversion Software, renowned for their BAFTA-winning title Prison Architect, has unveiled their latest creation: Arise Dark Lord. This innovative action RTS hybrid places players in the role of a dark lord, tasked with a singular yet ambitious mission: to conquer the lands using your undead legions and spread your malevolence far and wide. While this may seem like two missions, they are intricately linked, allowing for a seamless blend of strategy and conquest.

Gameplay Dynamics

In Arise Dark Lord, players wield complete control over a diverse array of misfits, all under the command of their cunning leader—yourself. The game presents a choice between raising the dead to form formidable zombie packs or channeling the dark arts to dominate orcish forces. The ultimate objective is to assemble an unstoppable, corrupting army, systematically claiming territory across the land. Lush forests become sources of lumber, while towering mountains are ripe for mining, all in the pursuit of expanding your dark influence. After all, the woods hardly need all those trees.

Players will also have the opportunity to construct their very own Dark Tower, reminiscent of Saruman’s fortress. This stronghold requires fortification with an array of weapons, traps, and barricades to withstand the inevitable resistance from the human populace. As your power grows, so too will the challenges, necessitating strategic planning and resource management. Sacking rival settlements not only furthers your conquest but also enhances your spellbook, keeping you one step ahead of any meddlesome heroes.

Arise Dark Lord is currently in early development, with a projected release date set for “sometime in 2027.” However, eager players can dive into the Prologue available on itch.io, providing a tantalizing glimpse into the game’s potential. A wishlist option is also available for those keen on following its progress.

Having sampled the Prologue during a lunch break, I found myself captivated by its enchanting, Tolkien-inspired parchment art style and the delightful nods to The Lord of the Rings—an homage that resonates with fans of the genre. Most importantly, the gameplay is genuinely enjoyable, offering a much-needed escape, even if it comes at the cost of some picturesque fantasy landscapes. Just be sure to manage your time wisely and return to work promptly, despite the allure of the game.
