Mikhail Parakhin, the former head of Windows and Bing at Microsoft, criticized the Windows 11 taskbar as "unusable," particularly after the 26H2 update, which did not restore the ability to auto-hide the taskbar when positioned at the top or sides. He expressed disappointment over the lack of features he advocated for, such as a movable taskbar with auto-hide functionality, which he believes is optimal for productivity. The September 2026 Patch Tuesday update allowed users to move and resize the taskbar, but auto-hide is still not available for non-bottom placements. Users must navigate through Windows Settings to adjust the taskbar, unlike the drag-and-drop feature in Windows 10. Additionally, the right-click menu in Windows 11 is limited compared to Windows 10, lacking options to lock or unlock the taskbar. Parakhin, now the CTO at Shopify, continues to use Windows for work and has noted that users may have to wait months for Windows 11 to fully integrate functionalities from Windows 10.

Two new platforms have launched on the PC scene: the Googlebook and the Nvidia RTX Spark platform. The Acer Googlebook 14 was reviewed by Ashley Biancuzzo, while the reviewer is currently focusing on Lenovo’s Googlebook 15, which has a subpar keyboard but features Google’s new Aluminium OS aimed at enhancing the Chromebook experience with AI-powered productivity. To fully utilize the Googlebook, an Android phone running Android 17 is required, although some Samsung phones have been allowed to connect. In contrast, Windows offers Phone Link, which connects an Android phone to a Windows PC and only requires Android 10, allowing for photo transfers, calls, messages, and running Android apps within PC windows. Phone Link is seen as a strong competitor to Googlebook’s offerings, except for app streaming.

Owlcat Games has delayed the release of its CRPG, Shadow of the Road, from November 12, 2026, to March 10, 2027, across PC platforms including Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG. This delay allows the development team to refine the combat system and enhance character progression. The decision also positions the game to avoid competition with major titles like World of Warcraft: Forever and Grand Theft Auto 6. Certain complex Android applications may not perform optimally on Intel x86 Googlebooks, despite most apps running smoothly. Google is working with developers to improve performance and compatibility. Intel Googlebook laptops use a translation layer to run Android apps, which can lead to decreased performance and battery efficiency. Currently, three models with Intel Core Ultra 5 Series 3 chips are available from Acer, Asus, and Lenovo, while two ARM-based models use Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite chip.

EU consumer authorities are investigating nine major gaming companies over player spending transparency, particularly regarding the pressure on players to buy excessive virtual currency. The inquiry focuses on how these games communicate the costs of in-game purchases, with authorities advocating for clearer pricing and reduced pressure on players. Industry representatives argue that changes could lead to costly redesigns and affect game viability, especially for smaller developers. They propose solutions like tailored top-ups, smaller bundles, indicative real-money prices, and refunds for unused bundles. The CPC Network is applying existing laws, but concerns have been raised about extending these laws beyond permissible limits. Regulators are seeking clearer pricing, cancellation rights, and better protections for younger players, and may pursue national enforcement measures if issues remain unresolved.
