Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL now supports direct querying of Apache Iceberg and Parquet data in your data lake

Amazon has introduced a new capability for Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL that allows users to query operational data alongside data stored in data lakes formatted in Apache Iceberg and Apache Parquet. This feature enables direct access to Iceberg REST Catalog-compatible catalogs, eliminating the need for data duplication or relocation. The integration of DuckDB within Aurora PostgreSQL allows users to query live operational data, including uncommitted writes, alongside data from data lakes using standard PostgreSQL syntax. This capability is available on Aurora PostgreSQL versions 17 (starting with 17.11) and 18 (starting with 18.6). Users must create an Aurora PostgreSQL cluster, attach an IAM role with the AuroraAnalytics feature, and enable the aurora_analytics extension to utilize this feature. They can create foreign tables referencing Iceberg or Parquet data in the data lake, and query them using familiar PostgreSQL commands. Aurora optimizes query performance through techniques like predicate pushdown and column pruning, and users can monitor query behavior with metrics provided by aurora_analytics_stat_statements(). Direct querying of Apache Iceberg and Parquet data is available across all commercial AWS Regions and AWS GovCloud (US) Regions without additional charges, aside from incremental Aurora compute and Amazon S3 request costs.

Googlebook improving ‘Better Together’ Android sync features, Samsung support rolling out

The launch of Googlebook has generated interest due to its integration with Android devices, but initial rollout revealed inconsistencies in the "Better Together" sync features. Google is addressing these issues through updates, including support for Samsung devices. Core functionalities linking Android phones with Googlebook include app streaming, notification synchronization, and the "Continue On" feature, though not all features are performing as expected. Users have reported that while Instant Hotspot works effectively, other features are slow or unavailable. Google has announced improvements to simplify the setup process and resolved a bug related to the QR code used for pairing. Users should ensure their Google Play Services is updated to version 26.37 and Cross-device Services to version 1.0.1346. Initially, there was a lack of support for Galaxy smartphones, but recent updates have allowed Samsung users to utilize the "Better Together" features. To maximize the experience with Googlebook, users should confirm their phone runs Android 17, check Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections, use a private home Wi-Fi network, and verify relevant app versions and settings. Some Samsung Galaxy users have reported successful integration of the features following updates, indicating that initial compatibility issues have been resolved.

Expect plenty more Silent Hill over the next few years, as Konami has plans for ‘second and third waves’ of new games in its revived horror series

Silent Hill has made a successful comeback after nearly ten years of inactivity, with three new titles released by Konami: Silent Hill 2 Remake, Silent Hill f, and Silent Hill: Townfall. These games have received positive reviews and are performing well in sales. Producer Motoi Okamoto expressed relief over the successful reception of these titles and highlighted the challenges faced in convincing Konami to approve new entries after the cancellation of Silent Hills in 2015. There is interest in remaking the original 1999 Silent Hill, and the involvement of NeoBards Entertainment and Screen Burn Interactive in future projects remains unconfirmed. Silent Hill f has been described as a "true return to form," and Screen Burn's work on Silent Hill: Townfall has been praised for capturing the essence of the franchise.

This App Wants to Make Your Android Handhelds Last Even Longer

Battery life is a significant concern for Android handheld device users, prompting some to use custom firmware while others prefer stock Android. Strategies to extend battery life exist but vary in effectiveness and effort required. SleepManager is an application designed to optimize battery usage during inactivity by automatically disabling Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, activating Battery Saver, managing specific applications, scheduling syncs, and preventing clamshell devices from waking inadvertently. It is accessible without rooting or complex commands, allowing users to download and configure it easily. The developer noted that SleepManager was created using AI-assisted development, which has sparked discussions about AI's role in app creation.

AnyPS5 implemented 100% of the instructions GPU PlayStation 5 for playing PC games

The AnyPS5 project has achieved 100% implementation of graphics shader instructions, allowing for the direct porting and cross-linking of PlayStation 5 executable files to Windows and Linux without traditional emulation. The project has translated proprietary calls to the PS5's graphics chip into the SPIR-V format for rendering through the Vulkan API. While the complete instruction set coverage indicates successful implementation, it does not guarantee flawless operation in all scenarios. The project has demonstrated stable performance, running a 2D platformer at 60 frames per second on an Intel Core i5 processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics card. The developers plan to implement key system libraries for the PRX format soon, leveraging architectural similarities between the PS5 and modern PCs. Additionally, advancements may support related initiatives like the kytyps5 translation layer for console games on PCs.
