Windows 11’s File Explorer is finally fixing an annoying file size quirk

Microsoft is reinstating the ‘Refresh’ and ‘Print’ options to the right-click context menu in Windows 11’s File Explorer in response to user feedback. These features are currently being tested in the Windows 11 preview Build 26300.8376, with a broader rollout expected soon. Additionally, file sizes in File Explorer will be displayed in megabytes or gigabytes for larger files, while smaller files will remain in kilobytes. Microsoft brings Refresh & Print back to Windows 11 File Explorer right-click, plus readable file sizes for Details view

Windows 11 is set to reintroduce the ‘Refresh’ button in the context menu, addressing user requests. Currently, File Explorer features two right-click menus: a modern context menu and an optional legacy menu, with the modern version lacking certain features like ‘Refresh’ and ‘Print.’ Improvements are also being made to the Details view in File Explorer, which will soon display file sizes in appropriate units (KB, MB, GB) for better clarity. Additionally, the address bar functionality will be enhanced, allowing users to enter paths with double backslashes or quotation marks. Other updates include accurate display of renamed files, proper closing of the address bar when selecting items from suggestions, and smoother keyboard shortcuts in flyouts. These updates are available in Windows 11 Experimental Build 26300.8376 and will roll out to all users in the coming weeks.

Windows 11 testers say new touchpad upgrades and File Explorer fixes finally make Insider builds feel smoother

Windows Insiders can check for new builds weekly, with Microsoft releasing four Insider builds that include various enhancements. The Beta Channel Insiders have not yet transitioned to the new Beta experience. Users in the Dev Channel moving to the Experimental Channel will receive Build 26300.8376, while those in the Canary 28000 series will also transition to Experimental, receiving Build 28020.2075. Insiders from the Canary 29500 series will be updated to Build 29585.1000. A free upgrade path to Windows 11 Pro Education from Windows 11 Home is available for K-12 educational settings, allowing institutions to manage devices effectively. This upgrade is one-way only. Build 26300.8376 introduces new gesturing functionalities for precision touchpads, including control over scroll/zoom speed and automatic scrolling. File Explorer has received updates for improved address bar functionality, more readable file size formatting, and refinements to the renaming experience. Build 28020.2075 includes improved typing reliability with the ADLaM keyboard and enhanced clipboard history performance. Font improvements have been made for the Leelawadee UI font family. Build 29585.1000 features a streamlined voice typing experience with the touch keyboard, reducing distractions.

Why Windows updates keep getting bigger and more bloated

Monthly updates for Windows 11 from Microsoft now range from 4 to 9 GB, compared to 300 to 500 MB updates two years ago. The increase in update sizes is attributed to the integration of advanced AI features, cumulative delivery of updates, and a fixed monthly update schedule. Cumulative updates bundle all previous updates, leading to larger file sizes, while the monthly frequency forces consolidation of changes into single releases. Users can check what their PC is downloading during an update by navigating to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery optimization > Activity monitor.
