Microsoft once used its own brand of ‘Lego’ to optimize Windows

Former Microsoft engineer Dave Plummer reflected on software performance challenges during the '90s, specifically the limitations of machines with 12 MB of RAM. He discussed the Basic Block Tool (BBT), which optimized software binaries by reorganizing their structures to enhance execution speed. A typical binary contained around 10 MB of code, but only about 300 KB was necessary for startup. If this essential code was scattered, it led to performance degradation due to excessive page access. BBT defragmented binaries, grouping related code to streamline access and improve user experience, particularly for large products like Windows and Office. Modern tools like BOLT and HP's Dynamo continue to optimize binary layouts and runtime code, but Plummer cautioned about the risks of manipulating binaries. He noted that while computational power has increased, modern software faces similar performance challenges, with larger binaries and complex dependency graphs. He emphasized the importance of locality in software design, advising to keep hot data and code together to enhance performance.

Microsoft reveals Teams can’t run well on low-RAM PCs, builds Efficiency Mode after years of bloat

Microsoft Teams is testing a new feature called "Efficiency mode," which will be available to all users by the end of June 2026. This mode aims to enhance performance on PCs with limited RAM, particularly those with 8GB RAM. Efficiency mode activates automatically when Teams detects that a device is hardware-constrained, optimizing performance by reducing video resolution and minimizing resource usage. The initial implementation includes changes such as dynamically adjusting video output and opening with a pre-selected chat. Users can opt out of Efficiency mode via the Settings menu. Microsoft is also exploring additional enhancements to improve chat access and reduce lag.

WhatsApp is eating 1.2GB RAM on Windows 11, even as Microsoft kills web app slop

Microsoft’s Teams app also faces similar performance challenges due to its reliance on the same framework. There is a growing concern about the trend of developers opting for web applications over native ones, driven by a lack of trust in native frameworks. Despite Microsoft's push for native app development through WinUI, there is currently no native version of WhatsApp for Windows, while Meta has developed optimized versions for other platforms.

Windows Server 2025 Adds DNS Over HTTPS for Secure DNS Traffic

Microsoft has rolled out support for DNS over HTTPS (DoH) in Windows DNS Server as part of the Windows Server 2025 update. This feature enhances the security of DNS communications through encryption and server authentication, allowing encrypted client-to-resolver traffic in on-premises DNS environments. DoH encrypts DNS queries and responses using HTTPS, protecting sensitive information from interception or alteration. It also uses digital certificates for DNS server authentication to reduce spoofing and impersonation risks. The feature is compatible with existing Windows DNS Server configurations and supports both encrypted and traditional DNS. DoH support is available on Windows Server 2025 with the June 9, 2026 update or newer. Administrators must configure a trusted TLS certificate and enable DoH in the DNS Server service to deploy this feature. Microsoft plans to extend encryption capabilities to include communication between the Windows DNS Server and upstream DNS resolvers in the future.

Although access to the actual files remains unchanged, affected folders may revert to default icons or display original directory names instead of customized labels. Microsoft has identified certain sources as untrusted, including files downloaded from the internet and specific remote sources, which affects how desktop.ini files are processed. Users are encouraged to verify file origins, and administrators should ensure that internal sources are classified as trusted to avoid disruptions in folder presentation. The update also includes other security fixes and enhancements.
