I tried the Gemini app for Windows. It wasted my time

The Gemini app for Windows allows users to interact with a generative content LLM chatbot, but non-Google account users can only use the chatbot. Signing in with a Google account provides access to stored chats, dedicated tabs for images and videos, and a daily brief summarizing essential emails for Workspace account users. Unlike ChatGPT’s Windows application, Gemini does not allow direct connection to desktop or services like Slack for task performance. A feature anticipated in the app is access to Spark, Google’s personalized AI agent, but it was not found during exploration. The app includes a “Scheduled Actions” section for Google’s suggestions and a “Personal Intelligence” tab to manage user interaction memory. There is also an “Import memory to Gemini” tab for transferring information from other LLMs. The app offers customization options but has limitations compared to competitors.

Gemini’s Daily Brief drops its subscription fee

Google's Gemini's Daily Brief feature is now available to free users in the United States, removing the previous paid subscription requirement. The Daily Brief compiles information from Gmail, Google Calendar, and other connected applications, along with insights from past interactions, to create a personalized morning summary. Users need to have Personal Intelligence, Memory, and Google Workspace integration activated to fully utilize the feature. The rollout is gradual, and currently limited to U.S. users. Daily Brief allows users to manage tasks, initiate chats, and receive updates via Gemini Live. Future developments may include audio Daily Briefs and integration into the Android lock screen.

Google Maps just added a feature that lets you order food without leaving the app

Devices running Android 7.0 or later may have better app functionality, while those on Android 6.0 should consider upgrading. Current Android smartphones from Google and Samsung will receive up to seven years of software updates.

HMD Asha 305: a sub-$75 Android phone with no Google apps

HMD is reintroducing the Asha brand with the launch of the Asha 305, priced at PHP 3,999 in the Philippines and around 2,390 baht in Thailand. The phone features a Unisoc SC9832E processor, options of 2–3GB of RAM, and 16–32GB of storage. It has a 5-inch display with a resolution of 854×480 pixels, a 5MP rear camera, a 2MP front camera, and a 2,500mAh battery with 5W charging. The Asha 305 operates on Android 14 Go without Google Mobile Services, offering around 100 pre-loaded apps. HMD has not announced availability or pricing for the US or UK markets.

Windows 11 ruined my old laptop, but this lightweight Linux distro brought it back to life

The author experienced significant performance issues with their six-year-old Acer Aspire laptop running Windows 11, which had only 4GB of RAM and an Intel Core i3-8145U. They decided to install Zorin OS Lite, which led to improved boot times, faster application launches, and lower RAM usage. The Speedometer score improved from 5.68 on Windows 11 to 12.0 on Zorin OS Lite. The laptop has been repurposed for travel, writing, and casual use, and the author is now more open to exploring Linux further.
