Exploring the Gemini App for Windows
The Gemini app for Windows serves as a gateway to Gemini’s generative content, prominently featuring the LLM chatbot. However, users who opt not to sign in with a Google account will find themselves limited to interacting solely with the chatbot itself. Signing in unlocks a suite of functionalities, including access to stored chats and dedicated tabs for images, videos, and a library of saved content. For those who choose to connect their Workspace account—encompassing Gmail, Drive, and more—there’s the added benefit of receiving a “daily brief” summarizing essential emails.
This integration is poised to enhance productivity, or so one would think. In contrast, ChatGPT’s Windows application allows users to connect the agent directly to their desktop or services like Slack, enabling the agents to perform tasks on their behalf. Unfortunately, Gemini lacks this capability, which may leave some users wanting more.
According to Google’s blog post, one of the anticipated features of the new Gemini app is access to Spark, Google’s personalized AI agent. However, during my exploration of the app, I found no trace of this feature, nor any indication of it being available as an upsell. My current non-subscriber status—having opted not to pay 0 per month for the Pro plan—might have influenced the app’s offerings.
Instead, the app guided me to the “Scheduled Actions” section within the Settings menu, located at the bottom of the page. Here, users can explore Google’s suggestions, such as receiving a recipe every weekend or a motivational quote each morning.
For those who decide to download the Gemini app for Windows, delving deeper into the Settings menu is highly recommended. The “Personal Intelligence” tab provides options to manage Gemini’s memory of user interactions, allowing users to enable or disable this feature as they see fit. Additionally, there’s a separate “Import memory to Gemini” tab, which facilitates the transfer of information from other LLMs to enhance Gemini’s understanding of the user. Reports from colleagues, such as Ben, indicate that similar functionalities are also offered by Anthropic’s Claude.
With a few more controls available for customization, the Gemini app presents an intriguing blend of features that may appeal to users seeking a tailored AI experience, albeit with certain limitations compared to its competitors.
