HMD Asha 305: a sub-$75 Android phone with no Google apps

HMD is reintroducing the Asha brand with the launch of the Asha 305, priced at PHP 3,999 in the Philippines and around 2,390 baht in Thailand. The phone features a Unisoc SC9832E processor, options of 2–3GB of RAM, and 16–32GB of storage. It has a 5-inch display with a resolution of 854×480 pixels, a 5MP rear camera, a 2MP front camera, and a 2,500mAh battery with 5W charging. The Asha 305 operates on Android 14 Go without Google Mobile Services, offering around 100 pre-loaded apps. HMD has not announced availability or pricing for the US or UK markets.

Your Android’s System Data Now Takes Up Cloud Storage Space – Here’s How To Disable It

Google has introduced granular backup settings for Android users, allowing them to manage data preservation more effectively. Users can disable cloud backups entirely and selectively choose which data sources or applications to back up. To adjust these settings, they can go to Settings > Google (or Google Services) > Other Device Data and toggle off the backup option. When cloud backups are disabled, app settings, call history, SMS messages, and media files will not be saved unless enabled individually. Backed-up data remains on Google's servers until manually deleted. If users exceed their cloud storage limit, they will face restrictions, such as being unable to send or receive emails in Gmail or back up photos to Google Photos. With cloud backups disabled, new devices will not automatically restore data from Google's cloud services. Users can expand their Google account storage by subscribing to Google One, with plans starting at .99 per month for 100GB. An active Google One subscription offers additional perks, including sharing benefits with family and access to enhanced Google Workspace features.

Microsoft Edge 150 Adds Google Account Sign-In on Windows and macOS

All Android users just got an important backup feature

Google is introducing a selective backup feature for Android users, allowing granular control over app data management. This update is initially rolling out to Pixel devices and users of Google Play Services version 26.24. Users can now selectively manage backups for each app, which helps conserve cloud storage space. The feature is available for those using Android 16 and Android 17, with other manufacturers expected to adopt it soon. Once activated, data is securely backed up to the cloud, but users should be aware that disabling backup for an app will permanently delete its previously backed-up data. To manage backups, users can go to their device’s settings under Google Services > Backup > Backup details. The rollout is gradual, primarily targeting Google Pixel smartphones. Most users will receive the update automatically, and they can check their version of Google Play Services in the settings.

South Korea accuses Google of Android App market abuse

South Korea's antitrust regulator, the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC), has formally accused Google of abusing its dominant position in the Android app market. The allegations involve a program called the Games/Google Velocity Program (GVP), which reportedly pressured game developers to favor the Google Play store over competitors. The KFTC claims Google's actions have affected approximately 14.16 trillion won in revenue and could lead to fines of up to 6% of that amount. The program, operational since July 2019, provided financial support to developers in exchange for favorable terms on Google Play. The KFTC has categorized these actions as an abuse of market dominance and an unfair exclusive dealing practice. Google has eight weeks to respond to the allegations before a final ruling is made. This case is part of a larger global scrutiny of Google's influence in app distribution, with similar issues arising in India and the European Union.

These crucial Google services on Samsung phones may be waiting for you to update
