Microsoft’s most useful Windows toolkit turns 30 this year, and it still doesn’t ship with Windows 11

Windows 11 will soon reduce glare on your screen without ruining your photos or videos

Windows 11 is set to enhance its accessibility features, particularly with the Magnifier tool, introducing a new contrast theme that reduces glare without altering the colors of photos, videos, and charts. Users can activate this feature via the Magnifier toolbar and customize their preferences in the Accessibility settings. The Cloud rebuild feature will allow users to restore their PC to a clean state with options to sanitize drives during the process. IT administrators can also initiate a Cloud rebuild remotely. Live Captions will receive an update to include a setting that excludes audio from screen readers. Issues with Hyper-V related to sharing host folders with Linux VMs have been resolved. Additionally, a problem with File History backups failing has been fixed. Many of these updates have already been released to Insiders in the Beta Channel, and changes regarding Cloud rebuild are active in the Experimental Channel.

Microsoft Patches Windows Defender Bug That Kept Saying Your Antivirus Was Off

Microsoft resolved an issue in its Windows Security framework that incorrectly indicated Microsoft Defender Antivirus was disabled. This fix was implemented through Defender platform update 4.18.26080.4, released on September 17. The update installs automatically unless users have blocked mandatory security updates. Users had been receiving false alerts during system boot and intermittently afterward, which redirected them to the Windows Security home tab where settings appeared normal. Microsoft acknowledged the issue on August 28, affecting all supported versions of Windows and Windows Server with the latest Defender updates, but did not specify the triggering update. Users in the Windows Insider program reported similar warnings as early as June.

Announcing new builds for 18 September 2026

New Windows 11 Insider Preview builds have been released for the Beta and Experimental channels. Notable new features include: - A new animation for the Mouse indicator in the Experimental channel, which can be activated through accessibility settings and kept visible until the escape key is pressed. - A new contrast theme toggle in the Magnifier, also in the Experimental channel, designed to reduce screen glare without altering the appearance of images, charts, and videos. - Updates to the Cloud rebuild feature in the Experimental channel, allowing users to restore their Windows 11 PC to a clean state and sanitize device drives during the process. Russia’s national messenger app Max found to contain backdoor capable of secret screen captures

Researchers have found that Max, a messaging app mandated by the Russian government, can secretly capture screenshots, access sensitive information, impersonate users, and inject code into other applications. Developed by VK, the app integrates messaging, banking, and government services. Since September 1 of last year, it has been preinstalled on new smartphones, following the blocking of WhatsApp and Telegram. Despite its reach, it is not widely used in political circles, with insiders indicating that compliance with its use is performative.

Windows 11 is getting a better way to find your mouse cursor, and we tried it

Microsoft has released a modernized version of the Mouse Indicator in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26340.9502 on September 18, 2026. This update features a new animation that can be activated through Accessibility settings, allowing users to keep the indicator on until they press the Esc key. Users can choose to activate the Mouse Indicator with a single or double Ctrl press. The previous version displayed a simplistic circle around the pointer briefly, while the new version offers a smoother, more dynamic animation. The feature is currently available only in the Insider build for the Experimental channel, and users can enable it by navigating to Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch > Mouse indicator.

We finally know how Windows XP’s infamous FCKGW product key ended up everywhere

Windows XP was released in two versions: Retail for individual consumers and Volume for Microsoft's partners and OEMs. The product key FCKGW-RHQQ2-YXRKT-8TG6W-2B7Q8 became widely recognized due to a potential leak by an insider at a major OEM, which was then spread by the pirate group Devils0wn. The Volume version's activation system required a unique key, but the FCKGW key was incompatible with the standard installation CD. To verify the legitimacy of Volume discs, the activation system searched for a secret 10MB binary blob exclusive to the Volume media. Microsoft blacklisted the FCKGW key with Service Pack 1 and implemented further security measures with Service Pack 2, restricting access to certain updates. Contrary to prior beliefs, the key's functionality was not due to a simple key generation algorithm but was designed by skilled engineers.
