Dell, HP PCs ran into endless reboot, BitLocker recovery loops but Windows 11 isn’t to blame

Dell confirmed that a bug in version 5.5.16.0 of its SupportAssist Remediation software is causing blue screen errors and system restarts. The issue is linked to the SupportAssist Remediation service, which operates independently from the main SupportAssist application. Dell has released an updated version, 5.5.16.1, to fix the problem. Affected users should check for version 5.5.16.0 in the Installed Apps section of Windows Settings and update their SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools. Users are advised to back up data and keep their systems powered during the update process. HP is facing issues related to Windows Secure Boot updates, causing boot problems and BitLocker recovery loops on affected devices. This occurs when new UEFI Secure Boot CA 2023 certificates fail to apply correctly. Welcome to the 2026 Edition of the Windows 11 Field Guide!

The Windows 11 Field Guide has been rebranded as the Windows 11 Field Guide 2026 edition, covering all supported versions of Windows 11 (24H2, 25H2, and 26H1) and highlighting new and existing features. The guide will evolve throughout 2026, with updates requiring considerable effort and likely unfolding over several editions. Outdated content has been removed, including chapters on Mail, Calendar, Microsoft 365, Movies & TV, and the Microsoft Store. Chapters have been consolidated for clarity, with three upgrade chapters merged into one and four installation chapters also consolidated. New chapters have been added on Microsoft Paint, Notepad, Quick Machine Recovery, and account security basics. Existing chapters, such as those on Desktop and Passkeys, are being revised. The focus has shifted from assisting users transitioning from Windows 10 to supporting the over one billion Windows 11 users, with all "Where did it go?" sections eliminated. Visuals have been refined to optimize file sizes, and a new companion book, De-Enshittify Windows 11, has been created. Future editions will be year-based rather than version-based, with free updates for existing owners through the release of Windows 11 version 26H2 in late 2026. Thurrott Premium members will have complimentary access to the 2026 edition.

Microsoft is killing Windows 11’s awkward 5-letter user folder name after years of complaints, but only for new setups

Windows 11 introduced the ability to customize the default user profile folder name during setup with the May 2026 Optional Update KB5089573. Previously, the folder name was automatically truncated to the first five letters of the user's email ID used for logging in. The default user folder is located under C:Users and serves as the primary directory for personal files. Users can now choose a custom name for their user folder during the Device Name page in Windows setup, but if skipped, the default name will be used. Custom user folder names must adhere to standard Windows naming requirements and cannot include reserved characters or system names. The feature is being rolled out gradually, and existing users may need to reinstall Windows to change their folder names.

The utility maintains transparency by creating .reg backups before modifying the registry and allows users to revert changes easily. It is open-source, lightweight, and designed for personal use rather than debloating. The program's structure enables users to inspect and modify scripts, ensuring clarity and control over system adjustments.
