Microsoft has taken a significant step in enhancing the user experience of File Explorer in Windows 11 by updating the way file sizes are displayed in the Details view. Previously, users encountered a uniform display of file sizes in kilobytes (KB), regardless of the actual size of the files. This seemingly minor adjustment is poised to make a substantial difference for users, particularly those who may not be as familiar with file size conversions.

As it stands, the ‘Size’ column in the Details view of File Explorer has been a source of confusion for many. While seasoned users might effortlessly convert KB into gigabytes (GB), casual users transitioning to Windows 11 may find this practice cumbersome. Recognizing this, Microsoft aims to optimize the operating system for a broader audience, ensuring that file sizes are presented in a more intuitive manner.

In the release notes for Windows 11 KB5101684, Microsoft confirmed this change, stating, “File sizes in the Details view now display using appropriate units (KB, MB, GB) instead of KB-only, making them easier to understand at a glance.” This update does not eliminate the display of sizes in KB; rather, it introduces a more logical approach. For instance, a 10MB file will now be shown as 10MB instead of 10,000KB, while smaller files will still be displayed in kilobytes when appropriate.
How to enable or disable File Explorer’s new file-size feature in Windows 11
This feature is being rolled out gradually, so it may not be immediately visible after installing Windows 11 KB5101684 or newer. For those eager to experience the new file size display, the following steps can be taken to enable it:
- Download ViveTool from GitHub. This third-party open-source application allows users to unlock features that are being gradually rolled out. While it generally operates without issues, users should be aware that compatibility problems might arise if Microsoft has paused the rollout on their PC.
- Extract ViveTool and use
cdto navigate to the folder containingvivetool.exe. - Run the command:
vivetool /enable /id:61014711
- Reboot your Windows system.
Once completed, users can return to File Explorer, where the ‘Size’ column will now reflect the updated units instead of the previous KB-only display. For those who prefer the original format, reverting the change is simple with the command:
vivetool /disable /id:61014711
. While many users may appreciate the new display, personal preferences will vary, and Microsoft has yet to introduce a toggle for switching back to the previous setting.
