These 9 Thunderbird features made me ditch Gmail for good

The author switched from Gmail to Thunderbird after 15 years, citing frustrations with Gmail's ad inundation and cluttered features. They appreciate Thunderbird's offline email access, extensive customization options, open-source nature, absence of forced AI features, free distribution without targeted ads, cross-platform compatibility, reliable notifications, effective multi-account management, customizable junk filtering, and its focus solely on email functionality. These aspects have led to a more streamlined and efficient email experience compared to Gmail.

F-Droid’s biggest update in a decade is coming despite Google’s sideloading crackdown

F-Droid is releasing version 2.0, which features a complete rewrite of the app in Kotlin for better support and updates. The new interface follows Google’s Material Design, simplifying navigation into three sections: Discover, Search, and My Apps. The Discover tab has been redesigned for a more intuitive experience, with apps organized into sub-groups and the Categories tab removed. Enhanced search functionality includes privacy-focused exploration and filters for specific criteria. A new installation flow with a pre-approval API aims to streamline app acquisition. F-Droid is aware of upcoming Google developer verification measures, now set for 2027, requiring developers to create accounts and verify identities. Version 2.0 is still in development, with an alpha build available on APK Mirror but lacking all features. No specific release date has been announced.

These 4 built-in Windows tools helped me build a self-healing PC

Windows operating systems include built-in tools for maintaining PCs, allowing users to monitor system health, repair corrupted files, and recover from boot failures with minimal intervention. Task Scheduler automates maintenance tasks by triggering them based on schedules or events, accessible via the Start menu or taskschd.msc. It can activate tasks at fixed intervals, on startup, during idle periods, or in response to Event Viewer entries. Tasks should run with the highest privileges and can be configured to execute regardless of user sign-in status. The Settings tab allows missed tasks to run as soon as possible. DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) is a command-line utility that repairs the component store, essential for installing updates and restoring system files. It offers three inspection levels: CheckHealth, ScanHealth, and RestoreHealth, with the latter requiring an internet connection for downloading replacement files. DISM logs operations in C:WindowsLogsDISMdism.log. SFC (System File Checker) verifies and repairs core operating system files using Windows Resource Protection. The command sfc /scannow checks all protected files, while /verifyonly provides a report without changes. SFC's effectiveness depends on the integrity of the component store, making it essential to run DISM first. Results are logged in C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Quick Machine Recovery (QMR), introduced in Windows 11, addresses boot failures by connecting to the internet to find solutions when repeated boot failures are detected. QMR is enabled by default on unmanaged devices and can continuously check for fixes. It is designed to respond to widespread issues rather than unique problems and may not work effectively on older hardware or without a network connection. Together, these tools provide a comprehensive approach to system maintenance in Windows 11, ensuring the operating system remains healthy and efficient without additional software.

Your Windows 11 PC Can Now Reinstall Windows From the Cloud

Microsoft introduced a feature called Cloud Rebuild with the release of Build 26220.9343 to the Beta channel on September 8, 2026. This tool allows users to download a fresh installation of Windows 11 from the internet, restoring the operating system and its drivers without needing removable media. The recovery process is conducted through the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), and users can access it by booting into WinRE or through Settings. For Cloud Rebuild to work, a healthy WinRE, internet access, a compatible networking driver, and local administrator credentials are required. The feature also enables the storage of Wi-Fi profiles in WinRE, allowing wireless-only setups to utilize cloud recovery. Cloud Rebuild is compatible with enterprise management tools like Intune and Windows Autopilot, but it is currently only available to Beta channel Insider participants for non-production evaluation.

Bitdefender Family parental control review

Bitdefender offers family plans that include comprehensive security features such as antivirus protection, a password manager, a VPN, and identity theft protection. Parental control features are integrated into these family plans rather than offered as standalone subscriptions. The Total Security Family plan costs .99 for the first year and supports up to 25 devices for five family members. The Premium Security Plan is priced at .99 for the first year and includes additional features like scam protection and a VPN. The Ultimate Security Family Plan and Ultimate Security Plus Family Plan are priced at .99 and .99, respectively, offering more extensive identity theft protection and credit monitoring. Key parental control features include screen-time scheduling, internet time management, age-appropriate content filtering, location tracking, Safe Search, and YouTube restrictions. The parental controls are compatible with Android, Windows, iOS, and macOS, though functionality may vary by platform. The setup requires physical access to the child's device, and after 2025, controls will be managed through the Bitdefender Central web dashboard. Bitdefender provides extensive customer support resources and 24/7 assistance via live chat, phone, or email. However, it lacks some advanced features found in dedicated parental control applications, such as social media monitoring and text/call monitoring.

90% of APAC Gen Z Experienced Cyber Incidents: Kaspersky Study

Recent research from Kaspersky highlights that 57% of Generation Z spends more time online than offline, with 75% of APAC Gen Zs using smartphones for daily internet access. Approximately two-thirds of Gen Zs in APAC feel comfortable navigating the digital environment, with confidence levels peaking at 77% in Indonesia and 71% in Vietnam. However, only 26% consider their knowledge of digital risks advanced, with India leading at 35%. Only 22% of Gen Zs in APAC use antivirus software, and 35% change their passwords regularly. Alarmingly, 90% have experienced at least one cyber incident in the past year. Smartphones are seen as critical for storing personal documents and passwords, yet only a third of Gen Zs back up important information regularly. Kaspersky emphasizes the need for cybersecurity measures to be integrated into daily routines and has introduced an interactive game to raise awareness among Gen Z users. The study surveyed 7,200 respondents across 18 countries in March 2026.

What is Android System Intelligence and what happens if you turn it off?

Android System Intelligence (ASI) is a component created by Google that enhances user experience on Android devices, particularly on Pixel phones, by supporting features like Live Caption, Now Playing, Smart Autorotate, and app predictions. ASI operates within Android's Private Compute Core, introduced in 2021, and utilizes machine learning without direct internet access, relying on Private Compute Services for cloud updates. It collects data such as crash logs and device identifiers for analytics, with users having the option to disable this data collection. ASI is not a standalone app but an infrastructure that supports various features, including music identification and smart notification actions. It requests extensive permissions for functionalities like smart predictions and contact suggestions, though not all features require all permissions. The privacy framework of ASI is designed to limit direct internet access, and users can view a Network Usage Log on Pixel devices. Disabling ASI is possible but does not remove it; it can be turned off under Settings > Apps. Reports indicate that essential phone functions remain intact even when ASI features are disabled, such as Now Playing and Live Caption. Google has not stated that disabling ASI will cause instability in the Android operating system. For troubleshooting ASI issues, Google recommends restarting the device, updating software, force-stopping the app, or clearing its cache or data. ASI has over 5 billion downloads on Google Play.
