Microsoft has integrated artificial intelligence into Windows 11 with features like Copilot and Windows Recall, but user reception has been mixed due to security and privacy concerns. Users can disable or uninstall certain features, leading to a demand for a more streamlined operating system. NTLite, a Windows customization tool, allows users to enhance their control over Windows 11, offering faster multi-threaded extraction and the ability to remove AI tools from Windows 11 25H2 images, thus simplifying the user experience and reducing installation sizes. NTLite supports various Windows Image files and live editing, enabling modifications without a complete reinstall. It includes an AI Component Management option for greater control over AI features. While some components are critical and cannot be safely removed, users are advised to test ISO files in a virtual machine and create restore points before making significant changes.

Windows has evolved to integrate functionalities that were once reliant on third-party applications, such as native support for ZIP files introduced in Windows ME in 2000, and the ability to open and create RAR, TAR, and 7z formats directly from File Explorer. Features like Storage Sense have replaced the need for tools like CCleaner by allowing users to manage temporary files more easily, and the effectiveness of Windows Defender has reduced the necessity for third-party antivirus solutions. Additionally, modern Windows can mount ISO files directly, eliminating the need for applications like Daemon Tools. The trend of operating systems adopting features from third-party applications, known as "Sherlocking," reflects a response to user demands while still allowing for optional third-party solutions.

Windows 7 and Vista are set to make a comeback in 2026, with modder Bob Pony creating ready-to-install ISO files for both operating systems. The Windows 7 x86 ISO includes updates until October 2024 and requires a CPU that supports SSE2 instructions. Microsoft has a program called Premium Assurance that provides security updates for legacy systems like Windows Vista for up to six years. However, Microsoft has officially ceased support for both Windows 7 and Vista, raising security concerns for users. Running these operating systems in a virtual machine is suggested as a safer alternative. The renewed interest in older systems is partly due to dissatisfaction with Windows 11, which has faced issues like unbootable PCs and stringent hardware requirements.

Windows has traditionally held a dominant market share in operating systems, but Linux is gaining traction, particularly after Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Zorin OS, a Linux distribution, attracted around 780,000 former Windows users within a month of this announcement. Bazzite delivered a petabyte of ISO files in one month, indicating a growing interest among Windows 10 users in alternatives to Windows 11. Linus Torvalds highlighted that many blue screen errors in Windows are linked to hardware issues rather than software bugs and recommended using Error-Correcting Code (ECC) memory for better stability. Microsoft has changed its error reporting from the blue screen of death to a black screen to enhance security and prevent destabilizing updates. There are three types of Blue Screen of Death errors: the Windows 3.1 Ctrl+Alt+Del screen, the Windows 95 kernel error, and the Windows NT kernel error.

Windows 11 requires a 1GHz dual-core CPU that supports TPM 2.0 and at least 4GB of RAM. Users with older PCs running Windows 10 can still install Windows 11 25H2 using known bypass methods, even if their hardware does not meet these specifications. The installation methods include using a command line for an in-place upgrade, utilizing Rufus to create a bootable USB, or editing the Registry during setup. The Windows 11 ISO file is approximately 7.20 GB in size and can be downloaded from Microsoft's official site. Users can revert to Windows 10 by navigating to Settings > System > Recovery and selecting "Go back."

The PiKVM project allows users to control a desktop or server remotely using a Raspberry Pi 4B and an HDMI-CSI bridge adapter, providing comprehensive keyboard, video, and mouse control even during reboots. It offers browser-based access to the PC's screen in real-time, enabling actions like force shutdowns, BIOS access, and operating system reinstallation, independent of the host system's operating system. The setup captures HDMI output and simulates USB input, functioning in scenarios like BIOS or crash screens. Essential components for building a PiKVM include a Raspberry Pi 4B, an HDMI-to-CSI bridge adapter, a microSD card, USB cables, an official power supply, and the latest PiKVM OS image. The setup process involves writing the OS image to the SD card, connecting the hardware, and accessing the web interface for remote control. PiKVM is beneficial for tasks such as troubleshooting boot sequences, configuring BIOS settings, and monitoring system status without physical interaction.
