Android Auto prepares support for Google Pixel’s Magic Cue & Proactive Assistance

Google is integrating its Proactive Assistance feature, previously known as "Magic Cue," into Android Auto. This feature aims to enhance user interaction with vehicles by providing timely and relevant information. The latest Android Auto 17.9 beta and stable version 17.8 include code strings indicating the upcoming arrival of Proactive Assistance, which debuted on the Pixel 10 series and was rebranded for the Pixel 11 series. Examples of Proactive Assistance include displaying flight information in Google Messages, pulling up restaurant listings in Google Maps, and alerting users about conflicting calendar events. Although the integration was announced in May, updates on its release timeline have been limited. The feature is currently exclusive to Pixel phones, suggesting that Android Auto integration will require a Pixel device.

Opera just gave its Android browser something Chrome desperately needs

Opera has introduced a built-in eSIM feature in its Android browser, providing travelers with 3GB of complimentary mobile data for three days in select destinations. This feature allows users to connect essential applications without incurring roaming charges and is available in 47 destinations. Users can activate the eSIM before departure and purchase additional data packages after the complimentary allowance is used. Opera's eSIM plans are approximately 33% more affordable than those of six major competitors. The service supports 5G connectivity where available and requires Android 10 or later on unlocked phones. The free data service is currently accessible in the US, UK, Germany, France, Canada, UAE, Brazil, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Poland.

Google maps out transition plan to replace Gemini Gems with Skills

Google is replacing its Gemini Gems with a new feature called Skills, with the rollout starting on October 5, 2026, in Workspace and expected to be completed by mid-November. Skills will begin appearing in the Gemini app on October 13, 2026, and will also be fully integrated by mid-November. On November 17, 2026, Gems will be moved to the Settings panel of the Gemini app, but users will still be able to create, edit, and use them. From March 1, 2027, for business and enterprise users, the creation, editing, and usage of Gems will cease, and they will be removed from the Settings panel, with existing workflows in Workspace Studio that include Ask a Gem becoming inactive. Remaining Gems will be converted into draft Skills. For education users, on June 1, 2027, Gems will also no longer be usable or editable, and will be removed from the Gemini app, Google Classroom, and supported third-party LMS platforms, with remaining Gems transitioning to draft Skills. Skills will not synchronize between the Gemini app and Workspace, requiring independent creation for each platform. Skills will be available to all Workspace customers and personal Google account holders, allowing users to combine multiple Skills for improved task management.
