Google maps out transition plan to replace Gemini Gems with Skills

In a significant shift for its user experience, Google is set to replace its Gemini Gems with a new feature called Skills, marking a pivotal evolution in its productivity tools. The transition is being communicated to users through notifications in the Gems manager of the Gemini app, and a detailed timeline has been shared to guide users through the upcoming changes.

Key Dates for Transition

Here are the crucial dates to keep in mind as Google implements this transition:

  • October 5, 2026: The rollout of Skills will commence in Workspace, with completion anticipated by mid-November.
  • October 13, 2026: Skills will begin to appear in the Gemini app, also expected to be fully integrated by mid-November.
  • November 17, 2026: While Gems will be relocated to the Settings panel of the Gemini app, users will still retain the ability to create, edit, and utilize them.
  • March 1, 2027 (business and enterprise only): The creation, editing, and usage of Gems will cease, and they will be removed from the Settings panel. Additionally, any existing workflows in Workspace Studio that include the Ask a Gem step will become inactive. Remaining Gems will be automatically converted into draft Skills within the Gemini app.
  • June 1, 2027 (education only): Similar to the business timeline, Gems will no longer be usable or editable, and will be removed from the Gemini app, Google Classroom, and supported third-party LMS platforms. Existing workflows will also be affected, with remaining Gems transitioning to draft Skills.

It is important to note that Skills will not synchronize between the Gemini app and Workspace. Users wishing to utilize a Skill across both platforms will need to create it independently for each. While the ability to create new Ask a Gem steps is being phased out, existing steps will continue to function in Workspace Studio for the time being.

Skills will be accessible to all Workspace customers as well as personal Google account holders, dispelling any uncertainty regarding availability for users with free accounts. This new feature aims to enhance productivity by allowing users to stack Skills within a single prompt, offering a more integrated approach to task management. For instance, a user could combine a “weekly newsletter” Skill with a “brand guidelines” Skill to streamline their communication efforts.

As this transition unfolds, users are encouraged to familiarize themselves with Skills and how they can optimize their workflows in the evolving landscape of Google’s productivity tools.
