How to check if your Android phone is still getting security updates

Smartphones may not receive crucial security updates, leaving them vulnerable to threats despite appearing to function well. Users can check their device's security status by navigating to Settings > About Phone to see the last security patch date. If it exceeds three to six months, the device may be nearing its support cutoff. Google Play system updates can also enhance security and should be checked via the Play Store. Manufacturers typically do not publicize end-of-life dates, but resources like endoflife.date can help users find this information. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S26 FE will receive updates until September 2033, while the Google Pixel 6 Pro will stop receiving support in October 2026. Google offers seven years of updates for Pixel 8 and newer models, while Samsung provides up to seven years for Galaxy S24 and Z Fold/Flip6 models. OnePlus offers four years of OS updates and up to six years of security patches. The European Union mandates a minimum of five years of software updates for new smartphones sold within the region starting June 2025. If a phone stops receiving updates, users should enable automatic app updates, avoid unverified apps, use two-factor authentication, back up data, and be cautious with public Wi-Fi. If the last security patch is over six months old or the device has surpassed its support cutoff, upgrading to a newer model is advisable.

Googlebook Cross-Device Features Locked Behind Android 17

Google's new Googlebook cross-device features require a smartphone running Android 17 to access functionalities like phone app streaming, task continuity, and shared file access. Only recent Google Pixel models and Samsung foldable devices with One UI 9 come pre-installed with Android 17, leaving many users with older flagship and mid-range devices unable to utilize these features. New models, such as the POCO F9 series, also launch with Android 16, making them incompatible. Additionally, applications with DRM-protected content or sensitive information will not stream to the laptop, displaying a blank privacy screen instead. The features are included at no extra cost, but their availability depends on the smartphone's Android version.

This app gives Wear OS the Pixel music feature Apple already copied

The app Now On Wrist enhances music recognition for Wear OS smartwatch users by connecting with Google Pixel's Now Playing feature. It sends notifications to the smartwatch with song details when music is detected, without transforming the smartwatch into a music-recognition device. Users receive alerts with customizable vibrations, can add recognized songs to their watch face, and access a dedicated Wear OS tile for detailed information. The app allows users to open tracks in music apps and maintains a history of recognized songs. It is compatible with any smartwatch running Wear OS 3.0 or newer and is ad-free, prioritizing user privacy. Feedback from early adopters has been positive, and it serves as a solution for accessing music recognition on smartwatches until Google integrates this feature into Wear OS.

Microsoft to roll out age verification system on Windows 11

Microsoft is introducing the Windows Age API to enhance user experience on Windows 11 by verifying age brackets without requiring users to disclose their exact birth dates. The API will categorize users into age ranges: under 10, 10-12, 13-15, 16-17, or 18 and over, and will indicate whether age status is verified or self-reported. Alongside this, Microsoft is launching the Microsoft Age Verification (MAV) system, allowing users to verify their age once through their Microsoft account, reducing the risk of oversharing personal data. This initiative responds to regulatory scrutiny and stricter global child protection laws requiring platforms to verify user ages. In late 2025, a US court approved a settlement between Disney and the FTC over unauthorized data collection from children under 13, highlighting the need for age assurance technology. In February 2026, the FTC issued guidance supporting age verification technology, stating it would not enforce actions against services collecting personal data for age verification if the data is deleted after processing. The Windows Age API is currently available to Windows Insider users, with plans for broader release, while the MAV system has been rolled out in regions like Singapore, Brazil, and Australia.
