Microsoft to roll out age verification system on Windows 11

Microsoft’s Innovative Approach to Age Verification

Microsoft is set to unveil a groundbreaking feature known as the Windows Age API, aimed at enhancing user experience on Windows 11 by verifying age brackets without compromising sensitive personal information. This innovative system seeks to streamline the user journey by eliminating the repetitive need for age confirmations across various applications and services on personal computers.

Rather than requiring users to disclose their exact birth dates, the Windows Age API will provide age ranges, categorizing users as under 10, 10-12, 13-15, 16-17, or 18 and over. Additionally, it will clarify whether a user’s age status has been officially verified or is based on self-reporting.

In conjunction with this feature, Microsoft is launching the Microsoft Age Verification (MAV) system. This will allow users to verify their age once through their Microsoft account, facilitating a seamless experience across Windows and its myriad applications. This approach significantly reduces the risk of oversharing personal data with third parties.

This initiative comes in response to increasing regulatory scrutiny and the implementation of stricter global child protection laws, which mandate platforms to actively verify user ages rather than relying on unverified self-reports. The urgency of these measures was underscored in late 2025 when a US court approved a million settlement between Disney and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over allegations of misclassifying YouTube videos, resulting in unauthorized data collection from children under 13. The ruling emphasized the importance of age assurance technology as a vital tool for improving content filtering for minors.

In February 2026, the FTC further bolstered this movement by issuing guidance that supports age verification technology. The agency confirmed it would refrain from enforcement actions against services collecting personal data solely for age verification, provided that the data is deleted after processing and not repurposed.

This shift marks a significant transition within the industry, moving away from self-reported age forms to more robust age assurance frameworks, thereby making it increasingly difficult for minors to circumvent age restrictions.

Microsoft has assured users that the API is designed with privacy as a priority, transmitting only the necessary details such as age bracket and verification status to external applications. Currently, the Windows Age API is accessible to Windows Insider users, with plans for a broader release on the horizon. Meanwhile, the Microsoft Age Verification system has already been rolled out in select regions, including Singapore, Brazil, and Australia, with intentions for further expansion to comply with local regulations.
