Copilot Gets Control of Windows and Your Files as Microsoft’s Recall Bill Comes Due

Microsoft is requesting Windows users to grant its Copilot feature access to their files and activities, following a previous retraction of a similar AI integration due to scrutiny. Copilot can analyze content on the device with user consent, performing tasks like organizing files and troubleshooting, using both local AI models and cloud processing. Microsoft has implemented safeguards, but its security team has raised concerns about potential risks associated with powerful features. The opt-in nature of Copilot places accountability on Microsoft, as users must actively grant access. Hybrid features are set to roll out in the coming months, with taskbar search actions already reaching Windows Insiders. Over 40 percent of new business laptops are being designed as Copilot+ PCs, with the Surface Laptop Ultra scheduled for release on October 16.

Windows Search learns to take orders

Microsoft has unveiled a preview of Windows Search that enhances user interactions and efficiency, featuring quicker results and a more organized interface. The new Actions feature allows users to modify settings directly from search results, such as muting speakers or minimizing windows. The search experience prioritizes results over a preview pane and includes improvements for handling typos and synonyms, although some inconsistencies remain. Inline previews and richer file details are planned for later this year. Built on the WinUI 3 framework, the updated Windows Search aims to improve performance and memory efficiency. The preview is currently available in English to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel, with access for eligible users through settings adjustments in the Windows Insider Program's Feature flags.

Copilot Gets Control of Windows and Your Files as Microsoft’s Recall Bill Comes Due

Microsoft is inviting Windows users to grant its Copilot feature access to their files and activities, with user consent. The new iteration of Copilot can understand content on the device, perform tasks like organizing files, troubleshooting, and writing code, with some tasks processed in the cloud. Activation is opt-in, folder access is limited, and Copilot operates under separate accounts from users. Microsoft has implemented safeguards, including Microsoft Execution Containers to define agent access. However, internal warnings from Microsoft's security team highlight potential risks associated with agents capable of modifying environments. Features for enhancing auditability of agent activities are under development. Microsoft previously faced criticism for its Recall feature, which raised security concerns. The opt-in design places accountability on Microsoft, as users must grant access. The hybrid features require a Copilot+ PC and are set to roll out in the coming months, with taskbar search actions already reaching Windows Insiders. Over 40 percent of newly manufactured business laptops are Copilot+ PCs, with the Surface Laptop Ultra launching on October 16.

From searching to doing: Building a faster, more streamlined Windows Search

Search functionality is essential for navigating Windows PCs, and enhancements to the Windows Search Box were initiated in July to declutter the interface and improve user control. A new Windows Search experience powered by WinUI 3 will be available on the taskbar for Windows Insiders starting October 7, focusing on speed and efficiency with a streamlined design. The user interface has been simplified into a single list format, and improvements include better matching for typos and synonyms. Future updates will introduce inline previews, richer file details, and the ability to filter results. Inline actions will allow users to complete tasks directly from the search interface, such as toggling settings and managing their workspace. There are plans to integrate the new search experience into the Start menu and enhance its capabilities further. The new search experience is rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel, with English as the initial supported language. Feedback can be shared through the Feedback Hub.

Will Android apps struggle on Intel Googlebooks? Google and Intel offer different answers

Support for independent tech journalism is emphasized, with Chrome Unboxed encouraging contributions through its membership program. The text discusses the challenges of running Android applications on Intel versus ARM processors in the context of the new Googlebook OS, which is built on Android 17. Google has warned that Intel-based Googlebooks may face challenges with certain Android apps, particularly those designed for ARM processors, although 96.6% of the top 10,000 Android apps reportedly run well on Intel devices. Intel disputes the need for developer adjustments, promoting its Intel Bridge Technology as a solution for application compatibility and performance. The ongoing public disagreement highlights concerns for potential buyers regarding the performance of Intel-powered Googlebooks, especially for resource-intensive applications.
