WhatsApp is currently in the process of rolling out a dedicated Contacts tab within its Android application, a feature that is being tested in the latest beta version available to users enrolled in the beta program via the Google Play Store. This enhancement is still under development, meaning it is not yet accessible to the general public.
New Features in the Contacts Tab
The newly introduced Contacts tab can be found in the navigation bar of the Android app. This tab provides a streamlined view of your contacts, highlighting which of them are currently online with a distinctive green dot.
In addition to displaying your contacts, the tab offers several engaging features:
- Birthday Reminders: Users will receive notifications for birthdays, complete with a cake emoji and the message “Birthday today” next to the relevant contact’s name. This information is automatically sourced from your phone’s contacts.
- Inviting New Users: The tab includes an option to invite new individuals to join WhatsApp, catering to the rare instances where someone may not yet have the app installed.
- Search Functionality: A search bar at the top allows users to easily locate contacts by name, number, or username.
- Sorting Options: The contacts list can be organized either by online activity—showing those currently active first—or alphabetically for quick access.
It is important to note that contacts who have opted to disable their last seen status will not appear as online, maintaining their privacy while using the app.
