It’s easy to forget now, but the first Elder Scrolls game had a rough launch back in the day: ‘It was a disaster in a lot of ways and somehow built a billion-dollar franchise’

The Elder Scrolls: Arena, released in 1994, received a score of 87 from reviewer Andy Butcher but did not achieve immediate success. Designer Ted Peterson noted that the game faced challenges during its launch, including late shipping leading to canceled orders from game stores. Initially, Arena sold fewer copies than Peterson's previous project, Terminator 2029. However, interest in the game grew over time due to word of mouth. Bethesda's president, Christopher Weaver, acknowledged skepticism about Arena, as the company was primarily known for sports games and faced doubts about breaking into the RPG genre. Bethesda's reputation was complicated by legal disputes with Electronic Arts. Despite these challenges, Arena contributed to transforming Bethesda's image from a sports-focused company to one recognized for RPGs.

Windows XP had a hidden database of broken apps, and Microsoft used it to trick them into working

Windows XP, released in 2001, was designed with a hidden compatibility database to support legacy software. This database, located in the C:WINDOWSAppPatch folder, contained approximately 200 compatibility fixes at launch and utilized a sophisticated matching system based on file size, checksum, version, and date. Windows XP could modify its behavior for specific applications through the use of shims, which acted as intermediaries to adjust application calls to the Windows API. Notable shims included Win98VersionLie, which faked the Windows version for compatibility, and EmulateHeap, which replicated the Windows 95 memory management style. Microsoft recognized that blocking applications relying on undocumented features could hinder user upgrades, as many organizations depended on legacy software. The compatibility fixes were managed through DLLs in the AppPatch folder, allowing the core operating system files to remain unchanged. Microsoft continued to enhance XP's compatibility with updates even years after its release.

The Copilot+ PC brand is dead: Microsoft and PC makers quietly pull back on tarnished Windows 11 AI PC branding

In 2024, Microsoft and Qualcomm launched "Copilot+ PCs" to promote AI-first computing, but faced challenges when security concerns led to the postponement of the key feature, Recall. A Microsoft representative stated that while the latest Surface PCs met Copilot+ specifications, they would not carry the branding. Qualcomm's Kedar Kondap explained that the branding aimed to define devices capable of advanced NPU experiences, but those experiences could still be provided without the Copilot+ label. NVIDIA chose not to associate its RTX Spark platform with Copilot+, indicating a lack of market resonance for the branding. Consequently, both OEMs and Microsoft are moving away from the Copilot+ label, despite maintaining the specification baseline for the experiences.

Windows has been so buggy I paused monthly updates, and now I wait for reports before installing anything

Users frequently express frustration with Windows updates due to unexpected restarts and frequent breakdowns, leading to a perception of being beta testers for Microsoft. Problems often arise with updates, including significant disruptions from routine maintenance updates. Recent issues included difficulties with the Windows Subsystem for Linux and copy-paste functionality in Microsoft Excel. In July, Microsoft paused an update due to unexpected shutdowns on some Dell PCs. Users are increasingly adopting a wait-and-see approach before installing updates, utilizing Windows 11's ability to pause updates for several weeks. Historically, Windows lacked robust update management, but recent changes have extended the pause period. There is a significant concern regarding the limited control users have over updates and the need for improved quality control from Microsoft.
