New World of Warcraft Midnight update throws Hunters an essential lifeline, with Warriors and Shamans also on the rise

Blizzard is releasing a World of Warcraft Midnight class tuning update that includes significant buffs for Marksmanship Hunters, doubling the damage of Explosive Shot and Steady Shot, and increasing Rapid Fire by 20%. Warriors will receive various damage boosts, including 20% for Execute and 50% for Ground Current. Unholy Death Knights will face damage nerfs, while Frost Death Knights will gain a 5% damage increase. Devourer Demon Hunters will see a 3% damage reduction, and Guardian Druids will experience reduced burst potential but increased damage for Thrash. Augmentation Evokers will have a 5% reduction in ability and pet damage. Paladins will benefit from a 15% healing increase for Holy Paladins and a 10% armor increase for Protection Paladins. Discipline Priests will see a slight adjustment to Atonement mechanics, while Holy Priests will receive a 6% healing boost. Outlaw and Subtlety Rogues will enjoy damage increases of 5% and 7%, respectively. Enhancement Shamans will receive a 5% boost to ability damage and a 10% increase to auto attacks. Affliction Warlocks will benefit from a 20% damage increase on Unstable Affliction and Corruption. In PvP, player health will be increased to slow down combat pace. Significant nerfs are also planned for the Alleria encounter in the Mythic Voidspire raid, including a 5% health reduction and an extended berserk timer. The update will launch with the weekly maintenance on May 5.

Backstage Ditches Postgres for Databricks Lakebase

The divide between operational and analytical databases is diminishing, as evidenced by Databricks integrating Spotify's Backstage with its Lakebase, transitioning from PostgreSQL to a unified data platform. Lakebase now offers a serverless PostgreSQL interface within Databricks, allowing Backstage to operate without awareness of the underlying changes. The integration involved updating configurations and addressing authentication challenges using OAuth JWTs. The integration transforms the database development lifecycle by enabling near-instant database branching through Lakebase's copy-on-write architecture, allowing developers to focus on testing changes rather than safety. Branching creates a pointer to existing data, making the operation instantaneous. Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR) allows for quick restoration of data, demonstrated by a recovery process that took less than four seconds. The goal is to integrate database branching into developer workflows seamlessly, making it automatic. This change could enhance developer productivity by allowing live data testing from the start, eliminating the need for mock objects, and resolving common issues related to staging environments. The traditional constraints of slow and costly database copies will become obsolete, prompting teams to reconsider how much time they spend on workarounds for now-nonexistent constraints.

RedSun: Windows 0day when Defender becomes the attacker

A vulnerability has been discovered in Windows Defender that allows standard users to exploit a logic error in the file remediation process, enabling code execution with elevated privileges without administrative access. This flaw, identified by security researcher Chaotic Eclipse, occurs because Windows Defender does not verify if the restoration location of flagged files has been altered through a junction point. The exploit, named RedSun, takes advantage of a missing validation in the MpSvc.dll file, allowing attackers to redirect file restoration to the C:WindowsSystem32 directory. RedSun operates by chaining together four legitimate Windows features: Opportunistic Locks (OPLOCKs), Cloud Files API, Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), and Junction Points. The execution of the exploit involves monitoring shadow copies, triggering Defender's detection, synchronizing OPLOCKs, and ultimately writing malicious binaries to the System32 directory. The root cause is the lack of reparse point validation in the restoration process, and currently, no patch or CVE has been assigned for this vulnerability. It affects Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server 2019 and later, and organizations are advised to implement behavioral detection strategies until a fix is available.
