Microsoft Enables Windows Settings Backup by Default

In a significant shift aimed at enhancing device recovery processes within enterprise settings, Microsoft has announced that Windows settings backup will now be enabled by default on eligible Windows 11 version 26H2 devices. This feature, previously referred to as Windows Backup for Organizations, is designed to automatically preserve users’ Windows settings and Microsoft Store app lists, streamlining the restoration of a familiar user experience following a device reset, replacement, or reimage.

Microsoft frames this development as a new “resilience baseline,” intended to minimize disruptions when devices require recovery or replacement. The company notes that many organizations have historically neglected to configure backup settings, leaving users at risk of losing their personalized configurations during hardware refreshes or recovery scenarios.

Windows 11 version 26H2 enables settings backup by default

By transitioning the backup policy from an opt-in model to a default-on approach, Microsoft aims to ensure that more devices have recovery data readily available before issues arise within organizations. Testing has indicated that this strategy not only reduces the manual setup workload but also facilitates a smoother transition for employees moving between devices.

“This update makes settings backup a baseline resiliency capability. If user devices ever enter recovery, you don’t have to guess whether their Windows settings have a backup. With this feature on by default, users are more likely to have their settings and Microsoft Store app list available to restore after a device reset, replacement, or upgrade,” Microsoft elaborated.

Administrators retain control over device restores

Despite this move towards automation, Microsoft has clarified that the recovery process will not be entirely automated. While backups will be enabled by default on eligible devices, the restore functionality remains under the purview of administrators, who must still configure it explicitly. This update does not alter existing policies; organizations that have previously set the feature through Microsoft Intune, Group Policy, or other MDM solutions will maintain those configurations.

Microsoft has also pointed out several important limitations regarding this new policy. The default-on behavior applies solely to Windows 11 version 26H2 or later, devices with the backup policy left in a “Not Configured” state, and environments outside the purview of the EU Digital Markets Act. Additionally, sovereign and restricted cloud environments are excluded from this feature. Administrators retain the option to disable the backup feature if it does not align with their organization’s specific requirements.
