HMD Asha 305: a sub-$75 Android phone with no Google apps

HMD is reintroducing the Asha brand with the launch of the Asha 305, priced at PHP 3,999 in the Philippines and around 2,390 baht in Thailand. The phone features a Unisoc SC9832E processor, options of 2–3GB of RAM, and 16–32GB of storage. It has a 5-inch display with a resolution of 854×480 pixels, a 5MP rear camera, a 2MP front camera, and a 2,500mAh battery with 5W charging. The Asha 305 operates on Android 14 Go without Google Mobile Services, offering around 100 pre-loaded apps. HMD has not announced availability or pricing for the US or UK markets.

First look: Per-app zoom controls on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8

Samsung has launched the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8, with pre-orders underway. A new feature in One UI 9 stable allows individual zoom controls for apps, enhancing user experience. This capability, initially found in the firmware of the Z Fold 8 Ultra, is now available as a Labs option on the standard Z Fold 8, accessible through Settings -> Advanced features -> Labs. Users can choose from five different zoom levels for each app, although Samsung's own apps are not currently supported. Testing shows varying results in different applications, with Chrome and Google Maps exhibiting different scaling behaviors. There are questions about whether this feature will remain exclusive to the Z Fold 8 and if it will be available across all devices in the Z8 lineup after retail sales begin on August 7.

Steam Week in Review: A torrent of janky retail sims continues to flood Steam, and there’s no end in sight

The retail simulator genre on Steam has gained significant popularity since late 2024, with 14 new titles launched last week. "Mall Together" attracted over 1,000 concurrent players and is notable for allowing players to construct entire shopping malls. PlayWay, a major publisher, released two of last week's titles and has launched four games since July 20, with 474 products listed on Steam. Critics have labeled some titles as shovelware, but PlayWay has also produced successful games like "House Flipper 2." Smaller studios are contributing to the genre, indicating demand for well-crafted retail sims. The top sellers on Steam from July 14-21 included "Counter-Strike 2," "Palworld," and "Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced." "The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu," released on July 15, received nearly 1,500 "mostly positive" reviews.

Samsung may finally let you set screen zoom levels on a per-app basis

Samsung has unveiled its latest foldable devices: the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Flip 8, and the Z Fold 8 Ultra. Within the firmware of the Fold 8 Ultra, code suggests a new feature called "App screen zoom," which would allow users to set different screen zoom levels for individual applications. This feature is not yet visible in the device's display settings, as it is not operating on retail firmware. There is potential for this functionality to be available when the devices reach consumers next month and possibly extend to Samsung's broader lineup and the Android ecosystem. An APK teardown indicates this feature is a predictive tool based on preliminary code, with no guarantee of public release.

Free PC game giveaway will save $20, one for Baldur’s Gate 3 players

The Epic Games Store is offering the game Foretales for free from July 23 until July 30 at 4 PM BST. The game can be downloaded from the Epic Games Store and is yours to keep indefinitely. Foretales is a story-driven card game with turn-based combat, set in a fantasy realm, and features a narrative about a thief named Volepain who must stop a curse. It has a retail price of .99 and is also available on Steam for .99 until July 28. Foretales has a Metacritic score of 74 and an 86% rating on Steam, with gameplay lasting approximately 15 hours for the main story, 20.5 hours including side quests, and up to 32 hours for completionists. The game is narrated by Travis Willingham.

One in six Windows PCs still runs Windows 10, and the vulnerabilities are piling up

Approximately 17% of all Windows client devices are still running Windows 10, equating to about one in six machines. Windows 11 accounts for 78% of Windows devices, with third-party trackers indicating it surpassed 70% of desktop share as of February 2026. Official support for Windows 10 ended in October 2025, but Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program will provide patches until October 2027 for eligible devices. A typical Windows 10 device has an average of 1,903 active security vulnerabilities, nearly three times the 652 CVE-tracked flaws found on a Windows 11 machine. 66% of Windows 10 vulnerabilities are classified as "high" or "critical." Small and medium enterprises have 21.4% of their Windows devices still on Windows 10, while larger enterprises have 16.6%. The healthcare and pharmaceuticals sectors have 23% of devices on Windows 10, followed by consumer and retail at 22%, and manufacturing at 18%. Lansweeper is urging organizations to enroll in the ESU program and address reasons for remaining on Windows 10 as 2026 approaches.

Microsoft ceased support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, making it vulnerable to security threats. Eligible Windows 10 devices can receive Extended Security Updates (ESU) until October 12, 2027, through a paid program, with free ESU available for users in the European Economic Area until October 14, 2026. Approximately 21.4% of devices in small and medium-sized businesses and 16.6% in large organizations still run Windows 10, often due to budget constraints. Devices in industries like healthcare and manufacturing are particularly slow to adopt Windows 11. Windows 10 devices face nearly three times the number of active vulnerabilities compared to Windows 11, with 66.6% rated as high or critical. About 2.8% of Windows 10 systems do not meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11. A total of 18.7% of Windows devices are running unsupported operating systems, with 22.2% on versions that will reach end of support within six months, totaling 40.9% of systems that are unsupported or soon to be. The consumer ESU program will expire on October 12, 2027, after which many devices will transition to unsupported status.

Windows 10 devices carry 3 times the risk of Windows 11, data shows

Approximately 16.9% of Windows client devices are still using Windows 10, which has three times more active Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) than Windows 11, totaling 1,903 compared to 652. Two-thirds of the vulnerabilities in Windows 10 are classified as high or critical, with an exploitable rate 1.7 times greater than in Windows 11. Migration to Windows 11 is not primarily hindered by technical limitations, as only a small fraction of Windows 10 devices do not meet the hardware requirements. Additionally, nearly 20% of monitored Windows devices are running end-of-life operating systems, including Windows 7, 8.1, and XP.
