The studio behind Star Wars Zero Company is hiring back some of its furloughed staff

The decision to furlough employees was made independently by Bit Reactor and did not involve its publisher, EA. Despite initial challenges, Star Wars Zero Company became a best seller on Steam and received positive reviews from critics.

Why Alternative App Stores Are Gaining Popularity Among Android Power Users

An alternative app store allows users to access apps and games not available on official platforms like the Google Play Store, including older versions, regional apps, and open-source options. Types of alternative app stores include third-party Android stores, open-source platforms, modified APK stores, regional stores, free app stores, and game-focused stores. Users explore these stores for a broader selection of apps, including those restricted by geography. Alternative app stores can provide apps that Google Play does not, such as regional apps and modified applications. When choosing an alternative app store, users should consider the platform’s reputation, app descriptions, update frequency, security measures, and source verification. Alternative app stores differ from Google Play by offering more flexibility and access to unique content, though security and developer support may vary. Modified apps are altered versions that may offer enhanced features. Alternative app stores are important for overcoming regional barriers and providing ad-free experiences. They host a variety of apps, including multiple versions of a single application, and typically feature user-friendly search functionalities. Comprehensive app information is often available, including version data and permissions. Some stores focus on open-source and independent apps. The legality of using alternative app stores depends on licensing and local laws, and they often feature apps not found on Google Play. Many alternative stores provide multiple app versions, and only reliable ones may offer faster updates.

We tested gaming performance in 17-year-old Windows 7 against Windows 11 on a modern gaming PC — older operating system delivers advantages in some scenarios

Windows 7 was released in 2009 and has received positive reviews for nearly two decades. A performance evaluation was conducted by installing Windows 7 on a modern PC and testing it against Windows 11 across ten games, including eight DirectX 11 titles and two DirectX 9 titles. In the game Metro 2033 Redux, Windows 11 achieved a higher average frame rate, but Windows 7 had better handling of CPU-related performance drops, resulting in stronger 1% lows. In Batman: Arkham Origins, Windows 7 outperformed Windows 11 in both average frame rate and 1% lows at 1080p and 4K. For Batman: Arkham Knight, Windows 7 showed higher performance when CPU-limited at 1080p, while Windows 11 led in GPU-limited scenarios at 1440p and 4K. In Batman: Arkham City, Windows 11 had the advantage across all resolutions as the game was GPU-bound. In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Windows 7 outperformed Windows 11 in 1% lows at 1080p, but Windows 11 took the lead at higher resolutions. Control showed Windows 11 outperforming Windows 7 across all resolutions due to GPU optimizations. Hitman: Absolution also favored Windows 11 in GPU-limited scenarios. For DirectX 9 games, Windows 7 demonstrated significant advantages in average frame rate and 1% lows in Batman: Arkham Asylum, especially at lower resolutions, while performance in Borderlands 2 was nearly identical across both operating systems at 4K. Overall, Windows 7 excels in CPU-limited scenarios, while Windows 11 performs better in GPU-bound situations, aided by advanced graphics drivers. Microsoft’s ongoing efforts aim to improve Windows 11's performance and reliability.

Silent Hill has made a successful comeback after nearly ten years of inactivity, with three new titles released by Konami: Silent Hill 2 Remake, Silent Hill f, and Silent Hill: Townfall. These games have received positive reviews and are performing well in sales. Producer Motoi Okamoto expressed relief over the successful reception of these titles and highlighted the challenges faced in convincing Konami to approve new entries after the cancellation of Silent Hills in 2015. There is interest in remaking the original 1999 Silent Hill, and the involvement of NeoBards Entertainment and Screen Burn Interactive in future projects remains unconfirmed. Silent Hill f has been described as a "true return to form," and Screen Burn's work on Silent Hill: Townfall has been praised for capturing the essence of the franchise.

Google has launched five new Googlebook laptops featuring the Googlebook OS, which has received mixed reviews. While the hardware is praised, the software is criticized for being problematic and not a significant upgrade from ChromeOS. Users report issues such as the inability to run Chrome with separate Google accounts, clunky Android apps, and awkward command requirements for messaging apps. The app ecosystem is struggling, with many applications failing to adapt to the Googlebook's interface, resulting in a frustrating user experience. How Telangana’s MeeSeva migration to open source could make governments rethink software costs

In April 2026, Telangana's MeeSeva platform migrated from the Oracle database to the open-source PostgreSQL database after 15 years of reliance on Oracle. This transition aimed to reduce annual costs of approximately ₹10 crore associated with Oracle licensing and maintenance. The initiative began in 2023, and the migration was executed with less than four hours of downtime, processing around 80,000 transactions daily. The migration involved over 85 microservices, three Oracle servers, and 1,939 tables, with the process automated by the Ora2Pg tool, which handled 60-70% of the transition. The migration cost was below ₹10 lakh, and after the switch, MeeSeva processed nearly 200 million transactions without data loss. The new architecture includes automatic failover capabilities to minimize disruption.

Thank goodness one of my top wishlishted CRPGs is dodging World of Warcraft: Forever and Grand Theft Auto 6’s warpath with a new release date

Owlcat Games has delayed the release of its CRPG, Shadow of the Road, from November 12, 2026, to March 10, 2027, across PC platforms including Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG. This delay allows the development team to refine the combat system and enhance character progression. The decision also positions the game to avoid competition with major titles like World of Warcraft: Forever and Grand Theft Auto 6. There is potential for the game to be released on Xbox platforms in the future.
