In August of last year, Windows was reinstalled on a dedicated SSD for gaming, and non-gaming applications were later added. The use of Win11Debloat significantly improved the experience, making it hard to consider installing Windows without it. Win11Debloat does not make major system changes and is simpler than alternatives like Tiny11. It removes unwanted software such as TikTok, Microsoft Teams, OneNote, Copilot, Recall, and Xbox Game Bar, while also addressing perceived downgrades in Windows 11, such as a less intuitive context menu and cluttered taskbar. The tool disables excessive telemetry and advertisements, contributing to a cleaner interface and allowing resource allocation to important applications. Users can choose to reinstall removed applications from the Microsoft Store. Win11Debloat implements registry changes to disable unnecessary features, making it a valuable option for minimizing bloat and telemetry in Windows installations.

NoVoice malware hit 2.3 million Android devices through apps Google never should have approved

McAfee researchers discovered a complex Android rootkit campaign, dubbed Operation NoVoice, that infiltrated 50 applications on Google Play, exploiting vulnerabilities in the kernel that had been patched but not uninstalled. The malware was resilient enough to survive factory resets and was concealed within seemingly benign apps, which collectively garnered 2.3 million downloads. The malicious payload was hidden in the com.facebook.utils package and used steganography to embed an encrypted payload within a PNG image. The malware conducted multiple checks to avoid detection and established contact with a command-and-control server, polling for exploit packages every 60 seconds. It utilized 22 distinct exploits, including vulnerabilities that had received patches between 2016 and 2021. The malware disabled SELinux enforcement and installed a persistent rootkit that could survive factory resets. Google confirmed the removal of the infected apps but noted that users who had already downloaded them remained at risk, especially if their devices were running unpatched Android versions. McAfee advised affected users to treat their devices as compromised and consider professional inspection or hardware-level storage wiping for remediation.

Microsoft is rolling out a new Experimental Windows Insider channel, transitioning users from the Dev Channel to the Experimental Channel with updates from the 26300 series builds. Over the coming weeks, Canary testers using the 28000 series will be moved to the Experimental (26H1) Channel, while those on the 29500 series will go to the Experimental (Future Platforms) Channel. The latest build for the Dev Channel is 26300.8289, which includes enhancements such as improved Windows Update functionalities and options to skip updates during the out-of-the-box experience. Dev Channel testers can enable the Experimental Channel option through Settings. The Experimental Channel will allow switching between 26H1 builds and future platform builds. Canary Channel testers have access to build 28200.1873, which rebrands the Xbox full-screen experience and improves the Touch Keyboard. Additionally, build 29576.1000 is available for testers on the 29500 series, featuring a redesigned volume slider and new metrics in Task Manager. Beta Channel Insiders can download build 26200.8283, which includes minor adjustments to the Start Menu and print drivers, but the new Beta experience will not be immediately available.
