Google enforcing new Android app memory limits in February

Google has announced a pivotal shift in its approach to memory management for Android applications, set to take effect in February 2027. This new policy aims to address the growing concerns surrounding memory usage and its impact on device performance. Apps that exceed the stipulated memory limits may face reduced functionality or even removal from the Google Play Store.

New Memory Limits Defined

In a recent update, Google clarified the specific memory thresholds that developers must adhere to. These limits are designed to ensure a smoother user experience across devices, particularly as the demand for resources continues to rise. The newly established limits are as follows:

  • 4GB: 2GB while running in the foreground, 1GB for user-perceived services, 1GB while running in the background.
  • 6GB: 2.25GB while running in the foreground, 1.25GB for user-perceived services, 1.25GB while running in the background.
  • 8GB: 2.25GB while running in the foreground, 1.5GB for user-perceived services, 1.5GB while running in the background.
  • 12GB: 3.25GB while running in the foreground, 1.75GB for user-perceived services, 1.75GB while running in the background.
  • 16GB: 4.25GB while running in the foreground, 2GB for user-perceived services, 2GB while running in the background.

Devices equipped with more than 16GB of RAM will largely be exempt from these restrictions, allowing for greater flexibility in memory usage.

The Rationale Behind the Changes

The impetus for these new limitations appears to stem from the ongoing RAM shortages exacerbated by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence technologies. Google emphasized the need to adapt to these hardware supply constraints, which have the potential to disrupt the user experience significantly. In a statement on the Android Developers Blog, the company noted, “The mobile industry is navigating significant hardware supply constraints that are altering device memory availability that over time can negatively impact the user experience.”

By implementing these broader memory limits, Google aims to safeguard the overall performance of Android devices, ensuring that applications do not consume excessive resources and lead to system-wide slowdowns.
