Google has introduced a new app installation framework called "Advanced Flow," which allows sideloading of apps on Android devices but requires developers to complete real-name verification. Applications signed by unverified developers will be flagged during installation. Users can still sideload apps, but must enable "Developer Options" and acknowledge risks associated with unverified software. A 24-hour waiting period is imposed after enabling Developer Options, with options for permanent or temporary toggling. Google plans to enforce these developer verification requirements starting September 30 in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, with a global rollout expected by 2027. ADB installations are not subject to these restrictions.

Google has begun rolling out a new advanced flow for installing applications from unverified developers on Android, which includes a mandatory 24-hour waiting period. This process requires users to access Developer Options, enable the option for unverified apps, authenticate their screen lock, confirm they are not being pressured, restart their device, and then choose to allow unverified apps for seven days or indefinitely. Users will receive a warning when attempting to install unverified apps but can proceed if they choose. The new flow also applies to updates for unverified apps, and disabling it will prevent users from receiving updates until re-enabled. The Android Debug Bridge (ADB) remains exempt from these requirements. The rollout includes a new Android Developer Verifier service that users can install to expedite the appearance of the advanced flow. Developer verification enforcement will start on September 30 in select countries and will expand to all regions and app installations by 2027. Reactions to these changes have been mixed, with many users expressing concerns about the additional barriers to accessing apps.

Most Android users consider third-party antivirus apps unnecessary due to the robust built-in security features of modern Android smartphones. However, Android devices are still vulnerable to viruses, malware, and security breaches, with a 2025 Gen threat report indicating a tripling of malicious push notifications and an increase in spyware issues. Google Play Protect blocked 27 million malicious apps in 2025 and conducts scans to manage security. Android employs sandboxing, regular security updates, and an opt-in permissions system to protect users. Upcoming features include phone call spoofing protection and enhanced live threat detection capabilities. Social engineering tactics, such as phishing and fake tech support calls, pose significant risks that antivirus software cannot address. Connecting to open Wi-Fi networks can expose devices to risks, and malicious push notifications can mislead users. Third-party antivirus apps may be beneficial in high-risk scenarios, such as public Wi-Fi networks or when sideloading apps, providing an additional layer of protection.

Google has rolled out Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 for enrolled Pixel testers, introducing significant security measures against call-forwarding fraud. The update is available for Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet users, who will receive version vCP41.260731.005.A2, while other users will be on version vCP41.260731.005.B1. The beta addresses bugs such as "visual corruption" and unexpected device restarts, and resolves misleading battery capacity warnings. New security restrictions include API restrictions and an OS-level confirmation dialog for call-forwarding commands. The Quick Settings layout has been revamped, allowing users to customize their arrangement of key buttons. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro have been removed from the Android beta program, and the focus will now be on devices starting from the Pixel 6a. The Pixel 11 series has officially debuted with pre-order deals available.

The Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 update has been released by Google, introducing a Quick Settings layout editor and improved protections against call-forwarding scams. However, users have reported bugs affecting usability, particularly with the Pixel Launcher causing home screen "blinks" and wallpaper disappearance. A workaround involves deleting and recreating Android's Private Space. Users also face difficulties adding new widgets, with some finding that a factory reset can resolve these issues. The Google issue tracker has noted complaints about the app drawer displaying applications in a randomized order, linked to Private Space problems. Additionally, Pixel 7 users have reported unresponsive touchscreens after the update, which Google has not yet addressed.

Recent findings indicate that Google’s Scam Detection feature may soon be available on vivo smartphones, making vivo the third Android manufacturer to adopt this technology, following Google and Samsung. The feature, which uses on-device AI to identify potential scams during phone calls, has recently been introduced on the Samsung Galaxy S26 series. A teardown of the Phone by Google app revealed internal references to the codename “Sharpie,” linked to Scam Detection, suggesting its upcoming availability on vivo devices. While it is unclear which vivo models will support this feature, speculation points to the vivo X500 series as the likely first recipient, with the X300 series possibly following. It remains uncertain whether vivo will integrate Scam Detection into its own dialer app or use the Phone by Google app. The technology enhances user awareness by monitoring for suspicious patterns during calls, such as requests for payment via gift cards, and provides alerts for potential scams, excluding calls from saved contacts. The anticipated expansion of Scam Detection to vivo reflects a growing trend among Android manufacturers to enhance user safety against scams.
