Microsoft engineer says “typing code is absolutely over,” and Windows 11 is already being built that way

Silver Fox uses adware to distribute ValleyRAT backdoor

The cyber threat group Silver Fox is distributing the ValleyRAT backdoor disguised as a legitimate signed Chinese adware application, specifically bundled with the QN Wallpaper tool. This malware allows attackers to gain comprehensive control over infected machines, enabling them to collect sensitive information, capture screenshots, and deploy additional malicious modules. The attack utilizes DLL sideloading, where a modified version of QN Wallpaper loads a malicious DLL from the same directory, circumventing signature-based security measures. The installer disables Windows Defender, adds itself to autorun entries, and uses the "runas" command to elevate privileges if the user lacks administrator rights. ValleyRAT also marks its process as critical, potentially causing a blue screen of death if terminated. Kaspersky has identified Silver Fox as the likely perpetrator of this campaign, known for similar techniques.

Windows 11 blocked you from shutting down PCs quickly, but now you can skip forced updates

The update introduces four options: Shut down, Restart, Update and shut down, and Update and restart. This change aims to provide a more user-friendly experience by allowing direct shutdown or restart actions without automatic update installations. Additionally, Microsoft has minimized forced restarts due to updates, requiring users to restart their PCs only once a month, and introduced an option to pause updates for an extended period. The August 27 optional update also improved sleep behavior during updates, ensuring that manually put-to-sleep PCs return to sleep after completing an update.

Microsoft says some users can’t open the Teams desktop client

Microsoft is addressing an issue (TM1466820) causing delays or preventing some users from accessing the Microsoft Teams desktop client on Windows systems, acknowledged on Thursday at 16:45 EDT. Affected users may experience loading failures or delays of up to two minutes and are advised to use the web or mobile versions of Teams as a temporary workaround. Microsoft is analyzing service logs and telemetry data to identify the root cause and has contacted some affected users for more information. Additionally, there is a separate issue (TM1466659) affecting Mac users, preventing them from joining Teams calls and meetings, confirmed on Sunday at 08:32 EDT. Microsoft is reassessing the cause of this disruption. Earlier this year, Microsoft resolved an issue blocking some Teams Free users from chats and calls. The company also confirmed a bug causing crashes and launch failures for Teams and New Outlook users after recent Windows security updates. Furthermore, there is an ongoing Exchange Online issue affecting multiple mailboxes, resulting in "Server busy" errors and delays in email communications with external domains.

Windows 11’s August update broke Teams and Outlook on Arm PCs

Microsoft has identified an issue affecting Microsoft Teams and the new Outlook for Windows on Arm-based devices, such as the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7, following the installation of Windows security updates released on or after August 11, 2026, specifically the KB5121003 update. The affected Windows 11 versions include 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, causing these applications to fail to launch or close unexpectedly, while classic applications like Outlook, Word, and Excel remain unaffected. The issue is more prevalent on new or freshly imaged PCs that have not received updates from the Microsoft Store. Microsoft is working on a solution to be included in a future Windows update. In the meantime, users can mitigate the issue by updating to the latest version of the Auto Super Resolution Package (version 1.0.19.0 or later) via the Microsoft Store.
