Memory Integrity serves a crucial role in fortifying Windows 11 against potential threats by ensuring that only verified kernel-mode code is permitted to load on the system. This proactive measure effectively blocks unsigned rootkits and elevates the defenses against driver-based kernel attacks, thereby enhancing the overall security posture of the operating system.

Before activating this feature, Windows conducts a thorough assessment of eligible computers to determine their readiness. According to official documentation, the implementation of Memory Integrity necessitates specific hardware requirements to function optimally.

In a previous analysis by Tom’s Hardware, it was noted that the combination of Hypervisor-Protected Code Integrity (HVCI) and Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) could lead to a performance dip in gaming, with reports indicating a slowdown of up to 15 percent. This update also enables VBS, which introduces additional layers of security.

Microsoft acknowledged in 2022 that both Memory Integrity and the Virtual Machine Platform might impact gaming performance on certain Windows 11 setups. The company advised gamers who prioritize performance to consider temporarily disabling these security features during gameplay, while also cautioning that such actions could diminish overall system security.

Performance losses are particularly pronounced on systems equipped with older hardware. Tom’s Hardware reiterated Microsoft’s recommendation for gamers to “temporarily disable Memory Integrity and VMP where they interfere with gaming performance,” striking a balance between security and user experience.
