Gemini app’s latest UI change makes it easier to set up thinking levels, control notifications

Google is updating its Gemini app to improve user experience with a refined interface and new notification controls. The model picker dropdown now only includes the “Extended Thinking” option, removing the redundant “Standard” option. Users can manage notifications for categories such as Daily Brief, Scheduled actions, Responses, and Product updates and tips, with toggles enabled by default. Gemini Spark is also being redesigned with a top navigation bar for better task management and a search icon replacing the previous menu button. The rollout of these updates may vary by device.

First look: Per-app zoom controls on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8

Samsung has launched the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8, with pre-orders underway. A new feature in One UI 9 stable allows individual zoom controls for apps, enhancing user experience. This capability, initially found in the firmware of the Z Fold 8 Ultra, is now available as a Labs option on the standard Z Fold 8, accessible through Settings -> Advanced features -> Labs. Users can choose from five different zoom levels for each app, although Samsung's own apps are not currently supported. Testing shows varying results in different applications, with Chrome and Google Maps exhibiting different scaling behaviors. There are questions about whether this feature will remain exclusive to the Z Fold 8 and if it will be available across all devices in the Z8 lineup after retail sales begin on August 7.

The setup process for NextDNS involves creating profiles for each family member, allowing for distinct settings and blocklists, and configuring devices with the provided DNS-over-TLS endpoint details. While NextDNS is effective, it does not eliminate all ads, particularly those from platforms like YouTube, indicating that additional measures may be necessary for comprehensive security. Regularly reviewing app permissions and uninstalling unnecessary applications are also recommended for enhancing security.

Powerful Windows 11 app Wintoys just got significantly better with long list of improvements

Hate the Copilot Key? Here’s How to Disable It Completely

In 2024, the introduction of the Copilot key on Windows PCs replaced the Right Control (Ctrl) key on many laptops, leading to user complaints about disrupted workflows and the loss of keyboard shortcuts. In response to the backlash, Microsoft is preparing to implement a "kill switch" for the Copilot key, allowing users to revert it back to its original function or disable it entirely. Users will soon be able to remap the key through Settings, and the option to disable it was not previously available. Microsoft acknowledged the challenges faced by users who relied on the Right Ctrl key and noted significant disruptions to workflows. While disabling the Copilot key may become straightforward, completely turning off Copilot is more complex, requiring users to avoid launching the Microsoft Copilot app for 28 days. Microsoft has also indicated a need to remove Copilot from applications where it does not perform well, following the removal of Copilot from several ineffective Windows 11 applications.

Halo: Campaign Evolved Looks Worse Than Master Chief Collection on Steam Deck and Xbox Ally

Halo: Campaign Evolved has been released for early access. It features impressive visuals on high-end PCs and current consoles but struggles on lower-end hardware, particularly handheld devices like the Steam Deck. The game requires an Intel Core i7-10700K and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super, which are beyond the capabilities of the Steam Deck and base Xbox Ally. On the Xbox Ally, the game runs at 1280x720 resolution with Very Low settings and achieves around 30 fps, occasionally dipping into the mid-20s. Despite being technically playable, the visual quality is poor, with bland textures and a lack of environmental detail. In contrast, the Master Chief Collection runs at 65-70 fps on the Xbox Ally and offers superior visual fidelity. The Steam page claims Campaign Evolved is Steam Deck Verified, although performance is lacking compared to other titles. For those wanting to experience the original Halo campaign on the Steam Deck, the Master Chief Collection is recommended.
