The search index on Windows 11 can contribute to storage bloat, with reported sizes varying significantly among users. The search index database, named Windows.db, is crucial for delivering quick search results and can grow dramatically, with some users experiencing sizes exceeding 200GB. A PowerShell script can be used to check the size of the Windows.db file. If the file size is unusually large, users can rebuild the search index through the Indexing Options in the Control Panel. Windows 11 has two indexing modes: Classic and Enhanced, which affect the size and number of indexed items. Classic mode indexes specific folders, while Enhanced mode indexes the entire PC. Excluding certain directories can help manage index size. Performance issues may arise on PCs with over 400,000 indexed items.

On Windows 11, the Storage Sense feature can reclaim space by cleaning user-level files, such as temporary data, items in the Recycle Bin, files in the Downloads folder, and cached OneDrive copies. It recently reclaimed approximately 1.67GB of space in one morning and a total of 10.2GB over the past month with default settings. Storage Sense only activates when the storage drive is nearing capacity unless the user adjusts the schedule. It can be configured to run daily, weekly, or monthly, and users can set parameters for emptying the Recycle Bin and deleting files in the Downloads folder. However, Storage Sense does not clean the entire drive or access the Windows component store, which holds outdated system files. The component store was found to contain approximately 11.84GB of data that Storage Sense cannot clean up. The total size of the component store is 20.14GB, with a significant portion comprising backups and disabled features. Users may need additional cleaning tools to manage the data that Storage Sense cannot address.

Microsoft has released an out-of-band update to address issues from the September 2026 Windows 11 patch, which introduced new features and fixed nearly 1,000 security vulnerabilities. The update includes a movable taskbar, adjustable height, configurable Start menu layouts, enhanced Windows Search, and size indicators in File Explorer. However, users with AMD Radeon GPUs are experiencing crashes due to driver instability, and reinstalling drivers has not resolved the issue. Microsoft did not address these GPU concerns in its communication. The update also fixed instability issues with Remote Desktop Services, but users still report audio output and microphone input failures, which Microsoft has included a fix for in the emergency patch. Lenovo users have reported unexpected black screens or shutdowns linked to power management issues.

Microsoft has released out-of-band updates for Windows 11 versions 26H1, 25H2, and 24H2 to address security vulnerabilities and improve system performance. The KB5129194 patch for version 26H1 fixes a critical elevation-of-privilege vulnerability (CVE-2026-62721) related to the Windows User-Mode Power Service (UMPS). The KB5129195 update for versions 25H2 and 24H2 also addresses a similar UMPS vulnerability and resolves a connection issue with Remote Desktop Services. Additionally, the updates fix problems with multichannel audio features on certain USB Audio Class 1.0 devices. These updates include enhancements from the September 2026 Patch Tuesday release, such as Taskbar customization, a faster Windows Search experience, and new Start Menu options. Users with unmanaged PCs will receive these updates automatically but can also check for updates manually.

SwiftKey is introducing a new AI-driven voice typing feature in its beta version, inspired by Google's Rambler feature. This tool cleans up and formats speech but does not provide live transcription. The AI model is about 163MB and allows offline functionality on Android devices. Unlike Google's Rambler, which is exclusive to Pixel devices, SwiftKey's feature is available on a wider range of Android smartphones. Testing on a Galaxy Z Fold 8 showed efficient offline processing and transcription. However, it lacks features like tone adjustments, advanced text formatting, and emoji insertion through voice commands. The SwiftKey Beta app can be installed on any Android device and is available for download on the Google Play Store.

Microsoft has acknowledged an issue with audio output for some Windows 11 users following the September security update KB5124008, which has affected USB audio devices. Users may encounter error messages like "This device cannot start (Code 10)" in the device manager, with symptoms including unresponsive volume controls, absence of audio output, and devices not appearing in the device manager. The issue is limited to USB Audio Class 1.0 devices. A workaround involves reverting to a 2-channel audio mode, which may restore functionality for some devices. Microsoft is working on a permanent fix. Previous updates have also caused issues, such as resetting custom cursors and impacting gameplay with crashes and freezes. A poll indicated that many users believe the quality of Windows 11 is deteriorating.
