I tested an Android app that lets anyone fight censorship – and shows your impact in real time

Snowflake Volunteer is a newly launched Android app available on the Google Play Store, created by the Tor Project, that allows users to contribute to internet freedom by transforming their smartphones into proxies for the Tor Network. It is a collaboration between Bloco, the Tor Network, and Guardian Project, building on the original Snowflake initiative from 2019. The app connects users needing access to the Tor Network, particularly in regions with heavy internet restrictions, by simulating user traffic as a video call via WebRTC and using dynamic proxies. Users can customize settings such as enabling/disabling the app, charging preferences, Wi-Fi operation, background operation, and connection limits. The app is open-source and available on both Google Play and F-Droid. Testing indicates that it does not significantly drain battery life, showing only a gradual decline over three hours with multiple connections. The app aims to enhance the robustness of the Snowflake network, making it harder for oppressive regimes to impose restrictions.

Databricks’ Electric acquisition adds embeddable PostgreSQL

Databricks has acquired ElectricSQL, a startup specializing in PostgreSQL database capabilities, to enhance its offerings by extending PostgreSQL functionalities to edge devices. The acquisition, announced on August 11, aims to streamline operations for AI agents by allowing local data access. ElectricSQL has developed PGlite, a lightweight WebAssembly version of PostgreSQL for faster data access and real-time synchronization. This acquisition follows Databricks' earlier integration of PostgreSQL capabilities through the acquisition of Neon in May 2025. The founders of Electric, James Arthur and Kyle Matthews, will join Databricks. PostgreSQL has become the most popular open-source database by 2024, recognized for its versatility in handling diverse data types. Databricks' acquisition strategy also includes previous acquisitions like Neon and MosaicML, aimed at enhancing its AI development tools.

Meet Snowflake Volunteer: Tor’s Android app that lets you help people bypass censorship

The Tor Project has launched the Snowflake Volunteer app, an Android application developed in collaboration with Bloco, aimed at helping users in restricted regions bypass internet censorship. This app enhances the existing Snowflake capabilities, allowing users to share their internet connections through volunteer-operated proxies to access the Tor network. In June, the number of unique proxy IP addresses used daily increased from approximately 1,300 to 1,700, marking a 29% rise. The Tor Browser operates as a free, privacy-focused network, routing traffic through volunteer-run secure computers. The Snowflake Volunteer app employs "domain fronting" to connect users to various proxies and is designed for those with limited technical skills, simplifying the process of becoming a proxy. Users can download the app from F-Droid or Google Play, run it in the background, and set usage restrictions. While Tor generally advises against using VPNs, some experts recommend them for users in highly censored regions, though this approach has its own challenges.

Tor launches Snowflake Android app to help users bypass censorship

The Tor Project has launched Snowflake Volunteer, an Android app that allows users to share their internet bandwidth to help others bypass online censorship. Snowflake functions as a Tor pluggable transport, disguising user traffic as video calls and routing it through temporary proxies managed by volunteers, making detection by censors more difficult. The app was developed by Bloco, a Portuguese studio, in collaboration with Tor’s anti-censorship team and is designed to be user-friendly while minimizing battery consumption. Users can configure the app to operate on unmetered networks and limit connections. Snowflake Volunteer is available on Google Play and F-Droid, with its source code also accessible for independent use. Volunteers are advised to consider their data limits and device impact before using the app.
