Microsoft’s PostgreSQL alternative, HorizonDB: Worth the wait?

Evolution of Cloud-Native Database Services

AWS has established a significant lead in the cloud database arena, with its Aurora PostgreSQL service becoming generally available in 2017. Over the years, this service has transformed from a traditional cloud-native PostgreSQL database into an advanced AI-ready offering. It now boasts features such as vector search and seamless integrations with Amazon Bedrock, enhancing its capabilities for modern applications.

In a similar vein, Google Cloud introduced its AlloyDB in 2022, which has rapidly evolved to include AlloyDB AI. This latest iteration incorporates vector search, embeddings, and model interaction, catering to the growing demands of generative AI and agentic applications.

Not to be outdone, Databricks and Snowflake have also made strides in this competitive landscape. Databricks launched Lakebase, which became generally available on both AWS and Azure this year. Meanwhile, Snowflake introduced Snowflake Postgres in February 2026, further solidifying its position in the PostgreSQL market.

As a relative newcomer, Microsoft unveiled its HorizonDB at Ignite in November 2025. The company emphasized its innovative architectural approach to cloud-native PostgreSQL, which is built around disaggregated compute and storage, as well as a database-as-log design. Additionally, Microsoft highlighted the importance of native vector search and deep integration with Foundry and Fabric, positioning these features as key differentiators for AI-intensive workloads.
