Play Store Catalog Interoperability Goes Live July 22: Android Developers Must Decide

Developers will be automatically enrolled unless they opt out by the deadline. All downloaded apps will undergo Play Protect scanning, and enrolled stores must prevent malware distribution, maintaining a malware installation-attempt rate below one percent. A December 2023 jury verdict found that Google violated federal and California antitrust laws, leading to a Ninth Circuit decision that requires Google to grant third-party app stores access to its catalog, dismantling barriers to competition. The legal battle began in August 2020 when Epic Games sought changes to counter Google's monopolistic practices. A March 2026 settlement introduced a tiered service fee structure, reducing costs for developers from a flat 30 percent commission to 20 percent for new installs and 10 percent for subscriptions. Developers can choose to publish all listings to all enrolled stores, manage stores individually, or opt out entirely. If no action is taken before July 22, Google will automatically share the app's listing with all enrolled third-party stores. The Play Catalog Access program aims to address the cold-start problem faced by alternative stores but does not guarantee a competitive ecosystem, as third-party stores must still create compelling user experiences to attract customers.

Peter Stokes, a 19-year-old from Estonia, was arrested and extradited to the United States on charges related to digital crimes, with the FBI using telemetry logs from Microsoft Windows to trace his online activities. These logs included his Global Device Identifier (GDID) and records of websites he visited. Stokes likely had his telemetry settings configured to Optional/Full, which allowed the transmission of URL data. The FBI connected Stokes to his ngrok account and linked his travel records to a New York IP address and a rental at the Empire Hotel, aided by photos he shared. Google and Apple assisted in the investigation by tracing Stokes' phishing phone number back to the same IP address used for his ngrok account. Stokes attempted to obscure his digital footprint using a VPN and other services, but modern digital identification methods made it difficult to remain anonymous.

Logical replication improvements in Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL 18

PostgreSQL logical replication has operational challenges, such as the absence of generated columns in the replication stream, replication conflicts causing apply worker halts, and lingering replication slots consuming write-ahead log (WAL) files. PostgreSQL 18 introduces enhancements to address these issues, including the ability to include STORED generated columns in the replication stream with a new publication parameter, detailed conflict counters in pg_stat_subscription_stats, automatic invalidation of idle replication slots, and the ability to toggle two-phase commit settings on live subscriptions. To set up a test environment, two PostgreSQL 18 instances (one publisher and one subscriber) are required, along with an EC2 instance for executing commands. The publisher and subscriber must have specific configurations for logical replication, including enabling logical replication and setting appropriate parameters. PostgreSQL 18 allows the replication of STORED generated columns by using the publish_generated_columns parameter. The subscriber must define these columns as regular columns. The new version also enhances conflict monitoring by providing detailed counters for different types of replication conflicts. Parallel streaming is now the default behavior for subscriptions, improving efficiency. The two-phase commit feature can now be modified on existing subscriptions without needing to recreate them. PostgreSQL 18 also introduces automatic cleanup of idle replication slots, which can be configured to invalidate unused slots after a specified duration. Considerations for implementation include ensuring that the subscriber's column types match those of the publisher for generated columns, the requirement for track_commit_timestamp for certain conflict counters, and the fact that sequences are not replicated. Cleanup of replication resources is recommended after testing to prevent unnecessary costs and WAL accumulation.
