What is Android System Intelligence and what happens if you turn it off?

Android System Intelligence (ASI) is a component created by Google that enhances user experience on Android devices, particularly on Pixel phones, by supporting features like Live Caption, Now Playing, Smart Autorotate, and app predictions. ASI operates within Android's Private Compute Core, introduced in 2021, and utilizes machine learning without direct internet access, relying on Private Compute Services for cloud updates. It collects data such as crash logs and device identifiers for analytics, with users having the option to disable this data collection. ASI is not a standalone app but an infrastructure that supports various features, including music identification and smart notification actions. It requests extensive permissions for functionalities like smart predictions and contact suggestions, though not all features require all permissions. The privacy framework of ASI is designed to limit direct internet access, and users can view a Network Usage Log on Pixel devices. Disabling ASI is possible but does not remove it; it can be turned off under Settings > Apps. Reports indicate that essential phone functions remain intact even when ASI features are disabled, such as Now Playing and Live Caption. Google has not stated that disabling ASI will cause instability in the Android operating system. For troubleshooting ASI issues, Google recommends restarting the device, updating software, force-stopping the app, or clearing its cache or data. ASI has over 5 billion downloads on Google Play.

AI’s memory crunch is coming for Android apps

Google has updated its requirements for Android applications in response to memory chip shortages affecting the tech industry. The mobile sector is facing significant hardware supply constraints that impact device memory availability. To address these challenges, Google is implementing new performance benchmarks focusing on dynamic memory usage and bitmap usage, along with code optimization requirements to prevent app slowdowns and crashes. Developers have until February 2027 to comply with these new performance standards. Additionally, all apps on the Play Store must meet the Zero Tap Sign-In requirement by April 2027, allowing automatic restoration of user sign-in states during device migrations.

Blue Dragon has been stuck on the Xbox 360 for 20 years, but no longer: a fantastic unofficial PC port unlocks the FPS, goes 4K, and even adds mod support

Hironobu Sakaguchi founded Mistwalker after leaving Square Enix in the early 2000s. Blue Dragon, a title from Mistwalker, is now available on PC due to a fan-made port created by programmer Tom, who used his toolset ReXGlue to recompile the game. This port integrates original game files into a single executable, enhances graphical fidelity, and resolves compatibility issues. Tom's work allows the game to run at 1080p resolution and 60 fps on systems with as little as one gigabyte of VRAM. The port was released on GitHub to coincide with the 19th anniversary of Blue Dragon's U.S. release, and future updates and mods are planned, including the introduction of characters from the Nintendo DS sequel.
