Your Windows Recycle Bin is a privacy risk—here’s how to actually delete your files

The Recycle Bin in Windows, introduced in 1995, serves as a temporary storage for deleted files rather than permanently removing them. When a file is deleted, it is moved to the Recycle Bin, which requires manual emptying or activation of a Storage Sense policy to clear its contents. This can lead to reduced hard drive space for users unaware of its behavior. The Recycle Bin can contain sensitive information, and if someone gains access to a Microsoft account, they can view its contents. Even after emptying the Recycle Bin, data can be recovered unless overwritten, with different recovery processes for solid-state drives (SSDs) due to maintenance routines like the TRIM command. Risks extend beyond physical access, as compromised accounts or malware can access deleted files. To securely delete sensitive files, users can use the Shift + Del shortcut, file shredding applications, and consider encrypting their drives with BitLocker. Specialized shredders for SSDs exist, and users can optimize drives through Windows settings to manage data recovery risks.

Gemini app’s latest UI change makes it easier to set up thinking levels, control notifications

Google is updating its Gemini app to improve user experience with a refined interface and new notification controls. The model picker dropdown now only includes the “Extended Thinking” option, removing the redundant “Standard” option. Users can manage notifications for categories such as Daily Brief, Scheduled actions, Responses, and Product updates and tips, with toggles enabled by default. Gemini Spark is also being redesigned with a top navigation bar for better task management and a search icon replacing the previous menu button. The rollout of these updates may vary by device.

Windows Insiders Get More Windows 11 In-Box App Updates

Microsoft has begun documenting updates to its in-box applications for Windows 11 through the Windows Insider Program. As of the end of July, updates have been rolled out for the following applications: - Calculator: Three fixes addressing issues in Scientific mode, an access key conflict, and improved screen reader support. - Clock: Two fixes targeting a bug in Focus Sessions and enhancing the accuracy of sunrise and sunset times for users at high latitudes. - Media Player: Three fixes for problems with local album art, disabled libraries, and track list rendering. - Notepad: Several fixes improving functionality with Markdown files, copying and pasting of indented and nested lists, concurrent print jobs, launch performance, and rendering of underscore characters. First look: Per-app zoom controls on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8

FreeBSD Developing New NTSYNC Driver For Accelerating Windows NT Sync Primitives
