First look: Per-app zoom controls on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8

Samsung’s latest foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8, have officially launched, and pre-orders are already rolling in. As excitement builds around these innovative gadgets, attention has turned to the new features introduced with One UI 9 stable. Recent discoveries have unveiled a noteworthy addition: individual zoom controls for apps, enhancing accessibility and user experience.

New Zoom Controls in Development

Last week, evidence surfaced indicating that Samsung was working on a feature allowing users to adjust zoom levels for specific applications. This capability, previously absent in Android, promises to offer a more tailored experience by enabling different zoom settings for individual apps. Initially, the feature was spotted in the firmware code of the Z Fold 8 Ultra, but it was not available for users at that time.

However, a tipster has now revealed that this feature has emerged as a Labs option on the standard Z Fold 8. Users can access it through Settings -> Advanced features -> Labs. This development suggests that Samsung is actively testing the functionality, paving the way for future enhancements.

The zoom settings allow users to select from five different levels for each app. While many applications are supported, it is noteworthy that Samsung’s own apps are currently not included. Whether this will change as the feature progresses beyond the Labs phase remains uncertain.

Testing the zoom options has yielded interesting results. For instance, in the Chrome browser, the user interface scales effectively, but the page content does not zoom proportionately. In contrast, Google Maps demonstrates a more harmonious zoom experience, with both the UI and app content scaling together, enhancing visibility and usability.

As users begin to explore these new features, questions arise regarding the exclusivity of this zoom functionality to the Z Fold 8. Additionally, with retail sales set to commence on August 7, there is anticipation surrounding the final firmware updates and whether these features will be made available across all devices in the Z8 lineup.
