Google Pixels could get an all-new way to customize lock screens, for better or for worse

A new lock screen customization page has been discovered in the Wallpaper & Style app on Pixel devices, indicating potential enhancements for users. This page includes buttons for adjusting wallpapers, colors, clock display, widgets, and a new category called “media,” which may integrate media playback functionalities. The current customization options allow users to modify the lock screen and home screen aesthetics, including clock styles, shortcuts, and notifications. The rollout of the Android 17 QPR3 beta raises questions about whether this new interface will improve user experience compared to the existing customization menu. Features revealed through APK teardowns are not guaranteed to appear in the final public release.

5 Open-Source Android Apps to Unlock Your Device

Android manufacturers curate devices, often leading to frustration for users who struggle to find specific settings due to the absence of desired features. The open-source community offers tools to enhance device functionality. MT Manager allows deep app modification directly on devices, providing access to app decompiling and editing without needing a desktop. It requires root permissions for its most powerful features and is not available on Google Play. Install with Options enables users to bypass installation restrictions on Android 7.0 and later, allowing the installation of apps outside the Google Play Store by using shell-level privileges or root access. Canta Debloater helps users safely remove carrier bloatware without root access on devices running Android 9.0 and above, using color-coded safety guidance to assist in the uninstallation process. ColorBlendr offers precise control over Material You color palettes on Android 12 and newer, allowing users to customize colors and themes with a live preview function. It requires elevated access via Root, Shizuku, or Wireless ADB. Kvaesitso Launcher replaces the default home screen with a search-centric interface, streamlining app navigation through a unified search bar that handles queries for apps, contacts, files, and calendar events. It is available on GitHub, F-Droid, and IzzyOnDroid.

5 Unique Android Apps Worth Your Time

More than 70% of the world’s smartphones operate on the Android platform. Users often struggle to find apps that address specific issues, leading to a time-consuming search through numerous options. A curated list presents five applications that provide practical solutions to common mobile frustrations. 1. AppsFree: Monitors Google Play for premium apps, games, and wallpapers that temporarily drop to free, allowing users to snag deals that would otherwise be missed. Developed by ts-apps GmbH, it enables users to blacklist developers and filter low-quality offers. 2. Monocles Browser: Prioritizes user privacy by disabling JavaScript and cookies by default, reducing tracking. It has an APK size of approximately 13–14 MB and integrates ad blocking and supports Tor/Orbot proxy networks. Created by Arne-Brün Vogelsang, it offers a clean browsing experience. 3. Amarok: Allows users to instantly hide files and applications without resource-intensive encryption by obfuscating filenames and signatures. It supports multiple hiding modes and includes a “panic button” feature for quick data concealment. 4. Buckwheat: Budget manager: Requires manual input of total budget and days to cover, promoting financial reflection. It calculates daily spending allowances and provides detailed analytics. Developed by Danil Zakhvatkin, it has a user rating of around 4.6–4.7/5. 5. Chill Live Wallpaper: Offers minimalist landscapes that sync with local time and weather, providing a visually soothing experience. Compatible with Android 7.1+, it is ad-free and has a compact APK size of 5–6 MB.

Microsoft engineer explains what made Windows 7 take 30 seconds to show the desktop

Changing the desktop wallpaper to a solid color in Windows 7 caused a 30-second delay on the Welcome screen after entering a password. This issue arose because the system waited for a signal from the wallpaper component, which only sent its "I'm ready" signal when an image file was used. When a solid color was selected, this signal was not sent, leading to unnecessary waiting. The problem was acknowledged by Microsoft for both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, and it was resolved with a Hotfix update in November 2009. Users found workarounds, such as switching to an image or creating a small solid-color image, to eliminate the delay.

No RCS, no problem: Chat themes in Messages are now available for standard texts

Google Messages has expanded its customization capabilities to include standard SMS conversations, allowing users to set custom chat themes. This feature, which was previously available only for RCS chats, has been quietly rolled out, enabling users to access chat themes in non-RCS chats. Users can find the chat themes option in the three-dot menu or by navigating to the contact info page. The customization applies only to the individual who sets it, rather than affecting all participants in a chat. This update enhances the visual appeal of SMS conversations without imposing changes on others.

Microsoft fixes bug that wiped Windows desktop settings

Microsoft announced that the September 2026 Patch Tuesday updates resolved an issue affecting desktop settings on certain Windows devices, which caused desktop wallpapers to revert to a solid black background after the installation of the KB5120998 August 2026 preview update. This bug impacted Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 systems, preventing the correct loading of desktop settings and also affecting mouse settings. Microsoft recommended users update their devices to the latest security update released on September 8, 2026 (KB5124008) to benefit from the fix.
