Microsoft Distinguished Engineer David Fowler addressed a viral post on social media that dismissed Windows as a viable operating system for developers, asserting that Windows is the most widely used operating system among developers. According to Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey, Windows is preferred by 49.5% of professional developers, while macOS is at 32.9% and Ubuntu at 27.7%. WSL accounted for 16.8%, and Linux outside of WSL garnered 16.7%. In contrast, a poll by The Pragmatic Engineer indicated Windows usage among developers at only 12%, with macOS at 61.6% and Linux at 24.2%. The appeal of Unix tooling is significant for web, cloud, backend, and AI developers, while Windows remains popular among .NET and C# developers, Visual Studio users, and game developers. Microsoft is enhancing its Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) to better cater to developers' needs.

Google has implemented new developer verification requirements for Android app installations, effective September 30, focusing initially on Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand for certified devices running Android 7 or later. Apps must be linked to verified developers, and users can install apps from these developers without extra steps. However, downloading apps from unverified sources will require a new protocol called the Advanced Flow, which includes enabling settings in Developer options and a mandatory 24-hour waiting period before installation. These measures aim to enhance security against malicious software while still allowing sideloading. Google plans to expand these verification measures globally by 2027, while maintaining an open ecosystem for app distribution.

Microsoft has warned Windows users about a cyber threat that disguises itself as a CAPTCHA test, where cybercriminals use fraudulent verification pages to trick users into executing commands that can install malware. This tactic involves users being directed to a compromised website that presents a fake verification window, prompting them to copy text and execute it in the Windows Run dialog. This method allows attackers to bypass antivirus software by pre-loading malicious scripts disguised as harmless images in the browser's cache. Once activated, the malware collects system information, steals data, and maintains long-term control over the system. Microsoft recommends using robust security software and being aware that no legitimate service will ask users to copy and paste commands into system dialogs.

A scrollbar shortcut in Windows operating systems, allowing users to jump to a specific location in a document by holding the Shift key and clicking on the scrollbar, has been part of the Windows experience since 2000. This functionality is not available in WinUI, the framework for modern Windows 11 applications. A GitHub issue titled “Shift-clicking in scroll bar should jump to destination” was opened in June, indicating the inconsistency of WinUI compared to other frameworks like Win32 and WPF that support this shortcut. Microsoft is aware of the shortcomings in WinUI and is working on addressing various performance issues and enhancing the overall quality of WinUI applications.

Marvin Velasco, a former daily user of Duolingo, became disillusioned after a year due to repetitive lessons and a lack of new content, leading him to uninstall the app despite a streak of over 500 days. Upon returning to refresh his German skills for a trip to Europe, he found the app cluttered with ads and unrelated features, which detracted from the language learning experience. The introduction of a new energy system limited his lesson completion and emphasized subscription tiers over genuine learning. After a trial of Duolingo Super, which he found gamified the experience, Velasco switched to Gemini, appreciating its user-friendly interface and personalized study plans. He tailored his learning with Gemini to focus on conversational German without the stress of losing streaks. Despite its flaws, he kept Duolingo for its structured modules, using both apps to create a balanced approach to language learning. He improved his experience with Duolingo by using it on a web browser to eliminate ads and disabling competitive features.

Satya Nadella has referred to Copilot as a “new OS for work” during a leadership update, following Microsoft's introduction of the latest iteration of Copilot. The new Copilot app, which replaces the previously named Microsoft 365 Copilot, is currently available for users, although some features like Home, Code, and Autopilot are still forthcoming. The app operates as a standard Windows application, specifically a rebranded Microsoft Edge launcher built on a Chromium framework. Nadella reiterated his vision for Copilot in a post dated October 1, emphasizing its role in consolidating various work functions into a single platform. The Copilot app integrates features such as Home, Office applications, and a proactive command center named Today. Currently, the app primarily functions as a chat interface, with significant features yet to be rolled out. The architecture of Copilot relies on a lightweight launcher and a complete Edge build, resulting in high RAM consumption. Microsoft has shifted Copilot’s architecture from a native WinUI version to a web-based wrapper, supported by a secondary component for additional functionalities. Internal documents reveal a vision for a prototype called CopilotOS, indicating a long-standing ambition to create a cohesive workspace.
