Windows 11, while a commendable operating system, has its share of shortcomings that can hinder user experience. Over the years, various software solutions have emerged to enhance the Windows experience, and several of these tools have proven so beneficial that one can’t help but wish they were integrated directly into the operating system.
7 Transparent taskbar
It just looks great
One of the most visually appealing enhancements would be a fully transparent taskbar. Although some applications can achieve this effect, the official Windows taskbar remains stubbornly opaque. The transition to Windows 11 saw a shift from the old Acrylic style to the Mica effect, which, while modern, lacks the desired translucency. The community has long awaited a native transparent option, and it seems like a missed opportunity for Microsoft to tap into this aesthetic preference.
6 Auto dark mode
It makes so much sense
Another feature that feels conspicuously absent is an automatic dark mode. Given that many devices already adjust brightness based on ambient light, it stands to reason that a similar system could be implemented for dark mode. Currently, users must manually toggle this setting, but an app called Auto Dark Mode provides a workaround. Still, it would be far more convenient if Microsoft incorporated this functionality directly into Windows.
5 A more customizable Start menu
Why is it so limited?
The Start menu is another area ripe for improvement. Users often seek alternatives that provide a more tailored experience, and while there are options available, such as Stardock’s Start11, the native customization options remain limited. Features like removing the Recommended section, organizing apps into folders, and viewing the app list alongside pinned items would significantly enhance usability.
4 Changing the default file manager
File Explorer is alright, but there are some great options out there
While Windows File Explorer has seen updates, many users still prefer alternative file managers that offer more functionality. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not allow users to change the default file manager easily. This limitation can be frustrating, especially when alternatives like OneCommander provide a more efficient experience. Enabling users to select their preferred file manager would greatly enhance the overall Windows experience.
3 Flow Launcher (or PowerToys Run)
It’s so snappy
For those who prefer keyboard shortcuts, Flow Launcher is a game-changer. This tool allows users to quickly launch applications, open folders, and execute commands without navigating through menus. While Windows has a built-in search bar, Flow Launcher’s responsiveness and extensibility make it a superior choice. Microsoft’s PowerToys Run offers similar functionality but lacks the same breadth of integrations.
2 Brightness controls for all monitors
It’s unacceptable this isn’t there yet
As we move into 2024, it remains perplexing that Windows does not allow users to adjust brightness across multiple monitors directly from the OS. While laptops can easily manage brightness settings, desktop users often find themselves relying on monitor buttons or third-party software. Applications like Twinkle Tray have emerged to fill this gap, but a built-in solution would streamline the user experience significantly.
1 PowerToys FancyZones
Make multitasking a breeze
Lastly, PowerToys FancyZones stands out as an invaluable tool for users with larger screens. This feature allows for the creation of custom zones for app placement, enhancing productivity by facilitating efficient multitasking. The standard snapping feature in Windows, while functional, lacks the flexibility that FancyZones provides. Incorporating such features directly into Windows would not only improve usability but also elevate the overall user experience.
Incorporating these enhancements into Windows could transform it from a solid operating system into a truly exceptional one. While third-party applications exist to address these gaps, having these features natively integrated would make a significant difference for many users.
