Microsoft has unveiled the first preview build of Windows 11, showcasing an innovative Copilot-powered Taskbar search box. This new feature replaces the traditional Windows Search interface with a sleek, floating Copilot interface that integrates both search results and AI chatbot functionalities. After experiencing this early iteration, it’s clear that the changes aim to enhance user interaction while promoting the use of Copilot AI, albeit with some caveats.
User Experience Enhancements
The initial impression of the new user interface is one of polish and fluidity. Engaging with the search box in the Taskbar triggers a dynamic ellipsis animation, followed by the emergence of a text box that hovers above the Taskbar, inviting users to input their search or chat queries. However, the current setup still retains the traditional Start menu search, which may lead to some confusion among users.
As it stands, the new Copilot search UI is an optional feature, requiring users to enable it through the Windows Settings app. Additionally, the Copilot app must be installed for the new search functionality to be accessible. If the app has been uninstalled, the option to use the Copilot search will not appear.
Challenges Ahead
Despite its promising design, the Copilot search interface does not significantly enhance the reliability of search results. It continues to rely on the existing Windows Search pane APIs, which means users may still encounter inconsistent results. This hybrid approach, offering both the new and old search interfaces, could potentially confuse users as they navigate between the two.
While the aesthetic appeal of the new UI is commendable, there is a desire for broader accessibility beyond the Taskbar. Many users prefer to initiate searches through the Start menu, and currently, there is no option to access the new search UI from that avenue. As Microsoft continues to refine this feature, addressing these usability concerns will be essential for a seamless user experience.
