Gamepad keyboard input comes to Windows 11 Release Preview, aimed at handheld users and sofa surfers | Tom’s Hardware

Windows 11 is stepping up its game for handheld PC users with the introduction of a new Gamepad keyboard functionality, now available in Preview Build 22631. This innovative feature aims to enhance the gaming experience by providing a tailored layout for the on-screen keyboard, specifically designed for use with gamepads. The Gamepad keyboard allows users to type more efficiently using sticks and buttons, complemented by additional touch controls. Its vertically-aligned design occupies approximately one-fifth of the screen, striking a balance between usability and screen real estate.

Additional Features and Enhancements

The rollout of this feature is gradual, meaning it will not be accessible to all users immediately. However, there is optimism that it will eventually be available for all gamepad users, particularly those utilizing handheld PCs. Alongside the Gamepad keyboard, this Windows 11 Preview Build introduces several other noteworthy enhancements:

  • Notification Suggestions Overhaul: Users can now disable Notification Suggestions, providing a more streamlined experience.
  • Advanced Phone Link Access: This feature can now be accessed directly from the Start Menu, enhancing connectivity options.
  • Copilot Key Rebinding: Users have the ability to fully rebind the Copilot key to other functionalities, allowing for greater customization. This could include launching different applications, provided they are in signed MSIX packages, or repurposing the key as a Search function.

Handheld gaming devices such as the Lenovo Legion Go, Asus ROG Ally, and Steam Deck stand to benefit significantly from these updates. For Steam Deck users who opt for Windows over the more optimized SteamOS, the introduction of the Gamepad keyboard could prove particularly advantageous once it transitions from Preview and Beta builds to a stable release.

While many handheld PC gamers are adept at navigating without this feature during its rollout, the existing touch functionality of Windows provides a workaround. Nevertheless, there is hope that Microsoft will expedite the refinement of the Gamepad keyboard, ensuring it reaches a polished state suitable for mainstream release. This would minimize the reliance on touchscreen interfaces, allowing gamers to enjoy a more tactile input experience.
