“I like where the program is going”: Microsoft’s Insider overhaul finally gives us a simpler path, but I had to dig in to understand what really changes next

In a strategic move to enhance user experience, Microsoft is embarking on a significant transformation of the Windows Insider Program. This initiative aims to streamline the process for users eager to explore new features and improvements in Windows 11. By simplifying the available channels, Microsoft is making it easier for participants to engage with experimental features without the need for third-party tools, such as the well-known ViveTool.

Beta Track

The revamped Beta experience closely mirrors the previous Beta Channel, but with a notable shift: all features showcased on Microsoft’s official support site will now be activated by default. This change eliminates the Controlled Feature Rollout (CFR) method, allowing users to access new functionalities without navigating through a “Feature flags” page or relying on external applications. However, it is important to note that the features available in the Beta track will differ from those in the Experimental track.

Enrolling in this experience: To join the Beta experience, users should navigate to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program and select the “Beta” option under “Select your experience.” Following this, users can access the “Advanced Options” to choose which version of the operating system they wish to test, including options like 25H2, 26H1, and Feature Platforms. After making their selections, users can check for updates to download the latest preview build.

Changing Tracks

For those looking to switch from the Beta to the Experimental experience, the process is now more straightforward, allowing for an in-place upgrade that retains personal files. To change channels, users should go to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program and select the desired option. If a change in the Windows version is also desired, this can be done within the “Advanced Options” settings. It’s crucial to remember that a clean installation is only necessary for those wishing to utilize the Feature Platforms version, as it does not align with the current operating system platform.

Release Preview Track

The Release Preview experience is also available, offering users nearly finalized builds of the operating system. However, this option will not appear by default; users must enable it through the “Advanced Options” settings.

Enrolling in this experience: To access the Release Preview, users should go to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program, open “Advanced Options,” toggle on the “Show Release Preview” switch, and select the “Release Preview” option under “Select your experience.” Following this, users can check for updates to install the latest preview build.

Enable Experimental Features

For those enrolled in the Experimental experience, enabling experimental features is now a seamless process. Users can do this directly through the Windows settings, avoiding the need for third-party tools. To enable these features, navigate to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Feature flags, select the “Enabled” option for each desired flag, click “Apply Changes,” and then restart the device.

Unenroll from the Insider Program

If a user decides to exit the Windows Insider Program, they can do so while keeping their apps, settings, and files intact. The process is straightforward; simply go to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program and activate the “Unenroll Device” toggle switch. This action will initiate an in-place upgrade, ensuring that personal data remains preserved.

Switching Existing Insiders

As Microsoft rolls out these changes, existing users will gradually be transitioned to the corresponding tracks. Devices currently enrolled in the program will be moved to either the Beta or Experimental experience, with no alterations to the operating system version found in the “Advanced Options” settings.

  • Devices in the Dev Channel will transition to the Experimental experience for version 25H2.
  • Devices in the Canary Channel running 28000-series builds will shift to the Experimental track for version 26H1.
  • Devices in the Canary Channel running 25900-series builds will move to the Experimental track for the Feature Platform version.
