I replaced my Windows PC with Lenovo’s SteamOS handheld – and didn’t regret it

Lenovo has unveiled the Legion Go S, a handheld gaming device that runs on SteamOS, now available for 0. This model distinguishes itself from its predecessor by offering a more streamlined gaming experience, highlighted by an 8-inch vibrant display. While the simplified operating system may come with fewer features compared to the Windows version, it enhances the overall gaming performance.

A Familiar Design

The design of the Legion Go S remains consistent with the earlier model, featuring a sleek Nebula purple finish instead of the previous Glacier White. The device is ergonomically designed for comfort, with textured grips that prevent slipping and hall-effect analog sticks that maintain precision while gaming. However, the touchpad located beneath the right analog stick has lost some of its utility, as the device is strictly focused on Steam without support for browsers or additional apps. While it can still be used for in-game functions, its small size can hinder precise movements.

Gaming on the Go

Your gaming experience on the Legion Go S will largely depend on the titles you choose. Powered by an AMD Ryzen Z2 Go processor, an AMD Radeon GPU, and 16GB of RAM, this handheld excels at lightweight games such as “Hades” and “Stardew Valley,” delivering smooth gameplay at 120Hz. However, it may struggle with more demanding AAA titles like “Monster Hunter Wilds,” where performance dips and graphics can appear blurry. Despite these limitations, the ability to run such games is commendable for a handheld device.

Users can easily adjust performance settings on the fly, allowing for customization based on the game being played. With a simple press of a button, players can access a settings menu to tweak performance or activate a default profile that optimizes settings automatically, making it user-friendly.

Battery life presents a challenge, with the device running for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes during intensive gameplay like “Monster Hunter,” while lighter games can extend battery life to about two hours.

Lenovo Legion Go S vs Steam Deck

The introduction of the SteamOS Legion Go S positions it as a strong competitor to the Steam Deck, rendering the previous Windows model less relevant. When comparing the two, the Legion Go S stands out with its touchscreen and 120Hz refresh rate, offering smoother animations and quicker response times. In contrast, the Steam Deck features a 7.4-inch OLED display, which, while delivering richer colors, maxes out at a 90Hz refresh rate.

Other factors to consider include the weight difference, with the Steam Deck being lighter at 1.4 pounds compared to the Legion Go S at 1.62 pounds. Additionally, the Steam Deck’s larger touchpads provide an advantage for first-person shooter controls.

Buying Advice

The Lenovo Legion Go S is competitively priced at 0, making it an appealing option for gamers. While it offers a delightful gaming experience, those who prioritize vibrant colors and larger trackpads may find the Steam Deck, priced at 9, to be a better fit for their needs.
