At the recent Ignite 2024 conference, Microsoft unveiled an innovative addition to its product lineup: Windows 365 Link, a mini PC designed to stream Windows directly from the cloud. While the internal workings of Windows 365 Link remain somewhat of a mystery, it is believed to be powered by a new web-based version of Windows, currently referred to as “NXT.” An early build of this operating system, also known as Windows CPC, has surfaced online, although it is not functional at this stage.
Exploring the New User Experience
Windows Latest attempted to explore the Windows CPC OS; however, the experience was limited to the out-of-box experience (OOBE) screen, which could not be bypassed without a valid Microsoft account and network connection. The OOBE for Windows CPC/NXT presents a more modern and user-friendly interface compared to its predecessor, Windows 11.
In their observations, Windows Latest noted that the design of Windows NXT/CPC/Windows 365 Link is refreshingly contemporary, featuring softer, rounded corners and clean layouts that enhance usability. The user experience is notably web-based, incorporating Microsoft Edge components, which contributes to a streamlined interface with fewer on-screen distractions.
The sign-in process has been simplified, focusing solely on essential elements to facilitate a straightforward login. Instead of the traditional plain text instructions seen in Windows 11, Windows CPC NXT employs vibrant visuals, including icons and folders, to guide users through the setup process. This design approach results in a smoother overall aesthetic.
Another significant improvement lies in the consistency of user interface elements. The settings screen, including scaling options, integrates seamlessly with the overall modern design. Unlike Windows 11, where some components retained older visual styles, every aspect of CPC NXT aligns with a cohesive, contemporary look.
Microsoft is reportedly developing an AI-enhanced version of Windows NXT, which may feature Copilot or Windows Intelligence as a central component. However, it is essential to note that Windows CPC/NXT and Windows 365 Link are not intended to replace the traditional Windows experience that many users cherish. Instead, they represent a new category aimed at individuals who prefer the flexibility of accessing Windows from anywhere at any time. This initiative aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy to compete with ChromeOS.
While the timeline for further revelations about Windows CPC/NXT remains uncertain, it has been indicated that this operating system will serve as the backbone for the Windows 365 Link mini PC.
