Microsoft 365 might’ve just given you a reason to finally leave Windows 10

Microsoft has made a significant announcement regarding the future of its Office applications on Windows 10, stirring a mix of relief and concern among users. As the clock ticks down to the End of Life for Windows 10 this October, the tech giant has been vocal about encouraging users to transition to Windows 11. However, in a surprising twist, Microsoft extended support for Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 by an additional three years, providing a temporary reprieve for those hesitant to upgrade.

Initially, Microsoft indicated that support for Microsoft 365 apps would cease alongside Windows 10’s support on October 14, 2025. This extension was welcomed by many who were not yet ready to make the leap to the latest operating system. Yet, a recent update has introduced a new layer of complexity, prompting users to reconsider their plans.

Office apps on Windows 10 won’t get new features after 2026

According to a report from The Verge, Microsoft has clarified that while security updates for Office apps on Windows 10 will continue until October 2028, new feature updates will come to a halt in August 2026. This phased approach means that users will receive feature updates up until Version 2608, after which only security updates will be available.

The timeline for the cessation of feature support varies depending on the update channel:

  • Current Channel: Users of Microsoft 365 Personal and Family will lose feature support in August 2026.
  • Monthly Enterprise Channel: Support will end on October 13, 2026.
  • Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel: Users will stop receiving new features on January 12, 2027.

While Microsoft did not guarantee that new features would continue until 2028, the recent shift in messaging may catch some users off guard, particularly those who assumed that feature updates were included in the extended support. The company’s communication emphasized security updates as a priority during the transition to Windows 11:

“In the interest of maintaining your security while you upgrade to Windows 11, we will continue providing security updates for Microsoft 365 on Windows 10 for a total of three years after Windows 10 end of support, ending on October 10, 2028.”

For those who rely heavily on Microsoft 365 applications and have yet to upgrade, this new information may signal that their time on Windows 10 is more limited than previously anticipated, especially for those keen on accessing the latest features.
