Microsoft Build ignored the most barren part of Windows 11, and it’s one only third-party developers can fix

Microsoft’s Focus on Windows Development

At the recent Build conference, Microsoft showcased its vision for the future of Windows and computing, unveiling a suite of new tools and hardware aimed at empowering developers to create native Windows applications and AI agents. Among the highlights was the introduction of the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, designed specifically to facilitate the development of AI-driven solutions.

As part of its ongoing commitment to enhance Windows 11, Microsoft is also refining its first-party applications under the initiative known as Windows K2. However, amidst these advancements, one feature seemed to slip through the cracks: the Widgets panel. This component, which can be accessed by clicking the weather icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen or by using the WIN+W shortcut, has not received the attention it arguably deserves.

While the Calendar Flyout and various utilities have been welcomed additions, the overall state of the Widgets panel remains a point of concern for many users. Despite some minor improvements, such as the separation of the MSN feed, the panel continues to lack the engaging and useful widgets that would elevate its functionality.

In response to the challenges surrounding Windows 11’s app ecosystem, Microsoft is actively assembling a team of app developers dedicated to addressing these issues. Sessions at Build highlighted two distinct categories of native applications, emphasizing the company’s focus on fostering a robust app environment. The Microsoft Store, once criticized, has seen significant enhancements and now boasts an extensive library of essential applications, further supporting the ongoing initiative to create native and Arm-optimized apps.

Yet, the Widgets panel remains a largely overlooked aspect of Windows 11. As Microsoft continues to innovate and expand its offerings, it will be interesting to see whether the company decides to reinvigorate this feature, which many users feel has been left behind in the broader push for modernization.
